Well I may be a little premature, but my spouse had an incident with our v, lowercase v. I am pretty sure it is a write off. The car was t-boned in an intersection. She missed a red light and the cab did not miss his green or my Prius. So now we have to decide what to replace the v with. I cannot find any info on the 2015 v that I would consider reliable? IE not found any links here. Or should we go to a plug in Prius? Most of our running is around the community so max 10 miles per outing, with occasional m-i-l trip of 40 miles round trip. What do v owners think of the PIP? And when is the 2015 v going to be on the market? Brian
The '15 v will be the same generation as the '14, no big refresh is rumored. As for the PIP, ask around of owners who have had them in your area through a winter. What happens in the cold to the effectiveness of the battery? Calculate the gas savings against any added cost of the PIP projected out over the length of time you intend to keep the car. Adding in any expense for installing a charging circuit in your location. And factoring in the cost of any extra money over the time you will have the car. Assuming the extra space and rear trunk utility of the v is no value.
a lot to be said for the pip, and a couple small negatives. it depends on your objectives, but if the price is right, and your electric rates are decent, sounds like you have the perfect type of driving. glad your wife wasn't hurt!
Hmm, don't know if I have ever seen one in my area. Maybe that is a clue, that the winter is too rough in Ottawa for a PIP? I know I never saw one because a few years back I asked here how you know which is a PIP. Well a few days from now and I will find out if a big repair or a write off for my 2012 v, ( lowercase v ) . The car did it's job, all the passenger side air bags deployed. The tint on the rear window (car spun out and hit light pole) kept all the glass together. The winter weather is no worse for a PIP than it is for any Prius, however it does lower MPG as you already know. The ICE has to run to make heat, so the advantage of a PIP will diminish the colder it gets. Lots of short trips aggravate that situation, same as any Prius.

If I was in a 2 person household where most of the trips were around town, I'd strongly consider the PiP. If I had a garage that would probably make it a no brainer. For that matter, if your max trip is really at the 40 mile mark roundtrip, you should probably consider a Leaf. One notable improvement in the current model v over your 2012 is that in 2014 they made some improvements in the crashworthiness. I think it was to the offset barrier test, which is a good thing in real world crashes, as it keeps partially engaged headon crashes from deforming the occupant compartment to a much greater extent. I'd think winter is worse for a PIP. It's forte is electric-only propulsion, and cold weather, running the heat or the defog, all tend to force the engine on.
Maybe my confusion? You said, I thought, that the winter hit for PIP is same as regular Prius? In that regard I think winter impacts PIP more, normally it'll run EV for whole trip, if short enough. But in winter PIP can force engine on, drastically reducing its mpg.
I can sympathize as my better half had a smaller accident. I am hoping assuming everyone is also OK in your case. Turns out ours will be fixed but momentarily I was looking at used PiPs and v's. I was looking at 2012 PiPs which made sense to me. Struggling with v vs. PiP decision, but seems like some nice used PiPs on the lots. I tell you though I have trouble thinking of any non-Prius that fits our needs.
I went to dealership as a lot of folk are telling me that car is beyond repair. After phoning Toyota Canada to ask about my ECP having a lot of years left what are my options. I inquired about release date of 2015, the young lady did not know. So I asked at my local dealer what they knew about the 2015, and a rough ETA. He told me December and a few of the changes which have me tempted to wait. The most important to me is both front seats having power adjustable angles at 8 and 4 way respectively. What was dropped which I do not care a whit about is the auto parking assist, which I tested but never used. And a few other minor changes with regards to stereo etc.. From what I've read, new trim, new colors, and ATP has changed or removed. I'd love to see the scan (and yes, I think a new thread makes sense.)
