The banner ads on the FHoP front page usually track my Internet usage very well. At the moment, most of them are for houses in the Inner Western suburbs of Sydney (I'm looking), and for hotels in Canberra, Melbourne, Shanghai, Beijing and KL. Fair enough. But this has just come up. Seriously, Google Or Whoever Does The Ads on PC, Wth? When - when - have I EVER suggested an interest in chipmunk-faced warbly nonsense? Never. That's when. I would rather have my ears poked out with a spike made of twisted glued strands of Michael Bolton's vocal cords than go to a Mariah Carey concert. So, The Computer That Looks At My Internet Usage, I bet you feel stupid and contrite now, don't you? Unless....... does the algorithm think that Prius owners must have awful music taste?
Maybe the ad server ran out of valuable targeted ads, and had to serve up something out of the cheap random bin.
We had this discussion on a previous thread!! How many more times. Prius owners are gay and therefore must be fans of Mariah. Even google know it - so it appears.
Mine was an ad for a 700-hp Dodge Challenger SRT. The one before that was a Georgia Political ad. (Georgia the US state, not the nation on the Black Sea by Russia...)
There's always advancements and improvements but some things never changed. 12 years ago: http://online.wsj.com/articles/SB1038261936872356908
Well, I know plenty gay people with Priuses. But I don't know any who are warbly chipmunk fans. Carey is evil. She is everything that is wrong with the world. She must be destroyed. Weeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllllllll....... Now that you mention it..... No. Excellent article. But in paragraph 1, it says "But all of them live with a machine that seems intent on giving them such labels. It's their TiVo, the digital videorecorder that records some programs it just assumes its owner will like, based on shows the viewer has chosen to record. A phone call the machine makes to TiVo, Inc., in San Jose, Calif., once a day provides key information. As these men learned, when TiVo thinks it has you pegged, there's just one way to change its "mind": outfox it." "Pegged" isn't the word I've have chosen here.
Huh, What did you say? Ads must be random or someone paying PC. A ram truck ad on mine now. No idea where that is coming from. I usually ignore them anyway and scroll down past them.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no! Or, to put it in song, since we're talking about Mariah.
Given that PC needs an income to keep going, I do make a point of clicking through on PC ads that are relevant to me (houses, hotels, holidays, etc). Every click gives PC a little tiny bit of income, after all. I don't do that sort of thing everywhere, obviously. But on PC, I reckon it's worthwhile.
Now this is more like it. Thank you Google Computer That Thinks It Can Profile Me. I do need a holiday.
As long as you're only using it to plug into the hotel TV to watch legally-downloaded movies, that's fine.
