My oil transmission is overdue. I went to two mechanics and they don't do it since it is complicated. Shell Rapid lube who do all kind of oil changes wont touch a Prius. I like to avoid going to the dealer. Can anyone suggest where to go. I am in Phoenix AZ.
Whichever place you end up going to (that's not a dealer), make sure you look at the fuid they are putting in. The bottle should say Toyota (WS) Fluid. Nothing else should go in your car.........
Some Canadian members were getting it done through dealership for $79.95 (can). Don't reject the idea of dealership without at least giving them a try: they're the guys with Toyota ATF-WS fluid. It's unfortunately not a scheduled maintenance, so their openness and knowledge varies. That said it is an easy DIY. The main thing is you need to raise AND level the car. The simplest way to get the new fluid in is with a funnel and 3' extension tube. I've done DIY a couple of times now, not that hard.
Sunday I finally did the dreaded ATF-WS change. The hardest parts were getting the car high enough, getting it level (on a diagonally inclined parking lot), and dealing with the confounded underpanel and its many fasteners. In comparison, the actual oil change was, as you say, easy, using the hose-and-funnel method. 3.05 quarts came out and 3.35 went in. The old stuff was black (as others have reported), but contained no visible particles I could find, even after stirring it with a small magnet. As far as I know, this was the first time it has been changed, at about 48K.
Was the driveway near steep enough to raise one end only? Be sure to use significant, carefully placed wheel chocks when on a slope. Not just rocks or random piece of timber; get some solid rubber ones. If you can swing it, a level slab is optimum. Or a lift, lol. If you use that interval again, t suspect the next drain will look cleaner: the first seems the worst. I changed ours at first year and third year points, roughly doing 12000 kms per year. Yeah don't laugh. Anyway, second change seemed too soon: drained fluid was cleaner looking.
thank you every one I called a dealer and they would do it for $119 which is not bad but then he said that I need to change engine coolant and the hybrid coolant all totaling to $370. I have 90k miles and the engine coolant is due at 100k. I don't see hybrid coolant schedule anywhere. Can anyone suggest.
$370 holy cow. You can diy all those in 1 afternoon Hybrid coolant is the inverter coolant. All the coolant should be replaced at 100k
On page 51 of the (US) Warranty and Maintenance Guide, footnote #3 says: Initial engine coolant replacement at 100,000 miles/120 months. Replace every 50,000 miles/60 months thereafter. Initial inverter coolant replacement at 150,000 miles/180 months. Replace every 50,000 miles/60 months thereafter. This footnote is cited in the 100,000 mile maintenance description, on page 50. Confusing as heck, but it's there.
That's the US schedule. Just looked up the Canadian, in the 2014 booklet they're saying: 160,000 km / 120 months, then every 80,000 km / 60 months For both engine and inverter circuits. Those km values are same as US engine coolant change in miles.
