On lower right tray there is a "windows icon" that offers to reserve for free. Certain windows systems only... MT2L03 ?
Upgrades are a mixed bag. I had a very high-end machine specifically for Vista, nothing legacy. All the hardware & software was brand new. The system worked great as a result. That means you'll need to take reports of Windows 10 the same way... ask for info about the hardware & software people are using with it. Experiences can differ by quite a bit.
^ Why are you tinkering with Linux and ChromeOS, btw? I've never been a fan of IOS, but I respect the fact that if you can play in their walled garden, and you can afford them then it's a solid choice for all of your glass gear.
See attached. This is from the Oct 2014 RC I have on a snapshot VM here. The new one has different icons, same layout. The Start menu is back, and it is slightly different, but good enough and the change is a good compromise between old functionality and new functionality. If you do all Apps, you can see the standard installed programs.
exactly, people badmouth vista, but my daughter had (and abused) a vista laptop for nearly 7 years and it works just fine, other than requiring new hard drives (it's on a 4th one now) and repairing a motherboard. all of those were cheap DIY. but i made sure to get a fast processor and 3GB RAM. i still don't find the vista or W7 interface user friendly. XP is the gold standard for that.
I have learned...anything before SP1 on any Windows OS is just beta testing. WIN7 is solid, I can wait on WIN10.
A little fuzzy here. I went ahead and clicked on the Windows 10 window pane that magically appeared on my task bar a few days ago -- and I was put in line for the upgrade (or to download the upgrade anyway) when it is released. The window pane went away -- but the pane is now back -- is there a way to get rid of this "PAIN?" Tried right click, just gives options on how to upgrade, etc.
Here is some discussions on how to turn off this annoying message: How to disable the "Get Windows 10" icon shown in the notification area (tray)? - Super User
well yes, but how do they make money if they give W10 for free? i've heard a rumor that next windows is going to be subscription based, ie software is free but you pay to get all the current security updates.
