We shopped the Accord hybrid in March before we bought our Pri. The Honda was definitely more luxurious BUT: 1) $5,000 more expensive. ($33K vs $28K for Pri); 2) I banged my knee on the dashboard in the Accord while getting in. It hurt a lot. I'm 6' and the prospect of limping frequently was unappealing. 3) Small trunk in the Accord. Vastly more usable cargo space in the Pri. 4) Personal preference for a smaller car. Honda makes some of these but they aren't in the same league as Pri IMO. Have driven Insight and Fit, didn't like either one. But they are cheaper of course so its apples to oranges. Now that we've had "Augie" (our car's name, derived from the license plate) for 4 months/5400 miles, and have found all of its (thankfully few) problems (Entune, goofy radio controls, poor nav), we still like the car and don't regret not getting the Accord. I agree there's no way the Accord is going to do better mpg over the long haul than Pri. Simple physics. It's heavier and goes faster.
Trade it in for a Accord then! Take the lost. your fault for not shopping around ! The accord can't match nor come close to Prius hwy mpg!
Then, to get mpg's into the 70's you have to do all the above plus put an egg between your foot and the accelerator. In a year or so - it'll become 2nd nature. .
Who has time for this sort of thing? (to drive around that slow?) A retired grandpa with a lot of time to fill? Better to drive a BEV and not worry about mpgs. I've been driving only to and from local store, getting only 30 something in the Prius. I don't care. Only driving a few miles at a time.
Not any more. The only IMA hybrid left is the Civic and CR-Z (Civic's on the chopping block. The CR-Z has at least one more year). The HAH-II and RLX Sport Hybrid use Honda's next gen series-parallel hybrid system. This is how the HAH-II can come back with hard hitting mpg numbers, beating the Camry and nearly matching the Prius. That's usually how a car community distinguishes the midlife updates to a car, by calling it a "0.5". (e.g. In the US, the Gen 3 would go from 2010-2011 and Gen 3.5 from 2012-2015 or 2016, depending on how Toyota labels the 4th Gen). Of course, if you just say Gen 3, it's also generally accepted that you mean the entire production run from 2010-2015/2016. 54mpg from that? That's pretty good. To get 60mpg, you'll need to invoke some more advantage techniques like pulse & glide and ridge-riding.
Odd, I just got mine, drove it from LA to Denver and back, averaged 47/mpg and I was going highway speeds and went over the Rockies... Going up the mountains definitely brings it down, but downhill (utilizing B Mode on the high percentage grades) definitely brings the averages up.
Does Utah still have the 80mph zones on the 15? How did you/the car handle those stretches? We're looking at a round trip next summer taking I-40 to Albuquerque, the 25 to Colorado Springs and Denver, the 80 to the Salt Lake area and then back down the 15. Family visits dictate the route so we won't have to deal with the terrain on the 70.
Yep, Utah is 80mph along I-70 & I-15. Prius did just fine. I used my cruise control for the majority of the trip. 80mph wasn't a problem. I just stayed the speed limit, so folks were passing me, but I wasn't limping along at 65 either. I definitely could tell a difference with how aerodynamic the Prius is compared to my old 2000 Pontiac Montana Van, that thing got blown around all over the place on I-70. Great trip!
Jesus drove a Honda. For it is written: "And they all went to Jerusalem in one Accord." (Mohammad rode a British motorcycle. The Hadith explains: "And his Triumph was heard throughout the land.")
