It took years of court battles with Toyota - after discovering he had some of his hybrid patents "appropriated" .... that sounds so much nicer than stolen. Yep, Toyota might still be scratching their heads, if it hadn't been for decades of groundwork laid out before them. On the other hand, Toyota can't give their patents away fast enough, to try to get help from others to push hydrogen. Good thing we taxpayers have deep pockets. I wish we could tell their lobby, "if you can't make it profitable in another 10 more years, you have to give all the money back from the last 40 years" . Watch how fast they'd run. .
since this was a double post - I'll do a reply here to make use of the spot - I'm glad you asked !! Of COURSE Toyota doesn't want to make EV's. Same reason GM didn't want to make hybrids & EV's, almost 20 years ago. There was a TON of dough to be made on land barges ... pickups/hummers/SUV's. How COULD big #1 GM build & promoted EV's .... what would the advertisement say ... something like below? "Don't waste money on gas ... or fund terrorist oil countries ... buy a car that's BETTER! Virtually no parts wearing out ... no oil changes ... fuel up at home ... no oil/air filters ... no plugs - no smog checks - much quieter - you'd have to be a tool to blow a day's income once or twice a month just to gas up!" See how schizophrenic GM would look if they sold plugins back in the 1990's? Would GM want to advertise plugins because they're "better"? Better than what ... the rest of their product line? Why would they shoot their self in the foot. It's like the smoking industry. You don't even WANT to promote the truth of cancer. Your ads promote a big fat lie. Smoking is sexy, macho, out-doorsie ... cool ... rebellious. The industry made up their own truth. History repeats itself. I give you the hydrogen car ... it's here now, runs on anything, and exhausts water. Still, the toyota video above states Toyota WANTS to give customers a choice. Does Toyota HAVE to give customers plugin's? That Toyota video said they WANT to give you a choice. No - they DON'T want to give you a choice. Toyota, like 1990's GM, wants to sell you what ever they think is best for their bottom line. During $4 gas, customers started buying hybrids, and dumping land barges. Hydrogen cars won't sell any better than the Hummer during a gas crunch. Customers eventually vote stupid products down with their wallet. That's why hydrogen cars can't get off the ground any better the Ford Edsel. Only difference - Ford didn't rape tax payers via a lobby to get their product out there. You miss the point still. It is TOYOTA saying that TOYOTA wants to give their customers choices. They don't. Again from history - Toyota lied years ago claiming their customers didn't want EV's - saying; A petition was started - hundreds signed - proving Toyota was just making stuff up, just like they're still doing with hydrogen. . . Petitioning Toyota To Build Electric Vehicles Toyota's agenda is not the same as many of their customers. It's a shame to watch them NOT learn from GM's mistake. .

That video was entertaining. I wondered how long it would take Toyota to say electric cars are no good. So he starts with how important it is for Toyota customers to have choices. The thing is, after he finished saying how people interested in ev's are troubled by the long refueling time, the natural choice preferred is hydrogen. Gee, I wonder why the dude asking questions didn't ask, "when will Toyota build an electric car"? Because after all there spin doctor says it's important to Toyota to give their customers a choice. Now that's how I define circuitous. "we want to give you a choice, and so that choice is a car you can't drive out of one state and not for many decades". .
Thats great, glad we have choices in transportation. The Mirai is just one more choice. Why would Toyota have to have an all electric vehicle if they feel the Mirai is a better choice? You as a consumer don't have to buy the Mirai, you do have choices still!

Toyota will build 3,000 Mirais for the U.S. market by the end of 2017. Toyota is starting slow in order to allow time for the Hydrogen stations to be built. Toyota is not hiding the fact that the stations need to be built and only a few cars will be released this year, so not to over whelm the system. Hyundai introduced a Tucson fuel cell vehicle last year. Honda will offer a fuel cell vehicle next year for a 2nd time. Also, Honda is partnered with General Motors in helping them in designing and working on the Hydrogen technology. GM already has almost 4 million miles on its test fleet of Chevrolet Equinox. The reality is that the Hydrogen vehicle are being taken seriously by some of the largest auto manufactures in the world. EV's and Hydrogen vehicles can coexist, just as Hybrids and ICE vehicles do today.
Here's a question, would you say Prius and hybrid supporters went crazy when it was said a Hummer2 was a more environmentally conscious vehicle? What is the difference here? Note, GM partnered with Honda because they had already spent a lot of money, and they did not foresee a pay off in the near future. Same with Ford and Nissan. Yes, FCEV and BEVs can coexist. Just get that message to the organizations that are pushing FCEVs now. They are the ones making it an either or situation by using half truths about both, and overtly favoring one over the other in policy.
