My car has about 160k, and it's mostly a highway car once a month, with some errands across town, when home. Sometime after not starting it for a few days, it will start roughly like dieseling for 10 sec, then cutting off. Then 10 seconds later, it starts normal with no dieseling , and off I go with no problems. Goes without saying I'm talking about the ICE. Plugs, air filter , good gas, all good on those accounts.
This is from Wikipedia , the definition may be more than just this, but Wiki, gives you a basic idea. Dieseling or engine run-on is a condition that can occur in spark plug, gasoline powered internal combustion engines, whereby the engine keeps running for a short period after being turned off, due to fuel igniting without a spark.
i suppose it's time to check the injectors, throttle body, maf sensor, and etc. have you checked for trouble codes?
No, have not check for trouble codes , but will. I honestly have never cleaned throttle body. I think I saved some notes about that from Patrick Wong. Thanks for the ideas.
Could be, going to start with codes and cleaning throttle body. I'm not getting any notice of codes, but guess they can come up with the right tool.
I agree to start looking at the fuel system. At this point I would invest in a mini-VCI. My Prius has the same age and mileage. Just the other day after a complaint of rough idling I cleaned the MAF sensor and throttle body, using the tips found herein. They were both very dirty, and the 30 minute project went very well with good results.
Can't seem to find my info on how to clean the throttle body and clean the MAF sensor, I know there are two different cleaners. Could someone post again the correct way to do this on a gen 2. If you have product names, that would be helpful too. Seems something needs to be unplugged? Thanks
Here's the thread I referred to. There are others. I used denatured alcohol for the TB and a can of CRC MAF cleaner for the sensor. I found it simple to remove the air cleaner housing (two hose clamps, two bolts, all 10mm) and then remove the MAF (two Phillips screws). I used a cotton rag and several swabs for the TB.
I don't think the throttle body is his problem if the car runs normally after 10 seconds. The car actually doesn't sound like it has a problem at all, it's just age and wear related. I guess it wouldn't hurt to clean the TB and MAF but I wouldn't expect it to cure a non problem. If there were issues, you would have a warning light
Maybe your right JC, will do this other stuff, just for preventative maintenance . The rough start only happen once in a blue moon anyway. Maybe it's just coughing something up, heheh
