My Prius v makes a 'woop, woop, woop' noise in the first 5-10 seconds of driving in the mornings, then the noise goes away. This only happens in the first drive in the mornings and in the afternoons when it's been parked all day 8-9hrs. Has anyone else experienced this? It sounds like it may be a rear brake disc but I'm not sure (my first Prius bought used about 2 months ago). Any thoughts?
Very likely surface rust on the rotor; sound goes away because it get's worn off with a little driving. Take a look with a good light before driving off, see what it looks like. A bit of rust can build up pretty fast; worst case for me is after the car's been washed then sat for a day or two.
These type brake noises are standard equipment on the 2012 and 2013 models. There's nothing wrong with your brakes. Dampness is a contributing factor. Drive it till the pads need replacing (maybe never).
Ok, I thought it might be uneven brake rotors and that they might need turning/resurfacing. Humidity where I live is 90%+ pretty much all the time so it must be rust... Thanks for the input!!
Not true. It IS a rear brake issue and Toyota will replace your pads and calipers if you bring them a video reproducing the noise. (They won't find it if you leave them the vehicle to reproduce - trust me.) Do a search on this forum under rear brake noise and you'll find the solution and the TSB on it. Anyone else agree?
