Hello Priuschatters, I recently bought a GenII Prii. I've noticed after a month of owning the vehicle the Prii has two different set of tires 185/65/15 Front & 195/60/15 Rear. I've done some lurking here but I don't think I've come across any posting regarding this. Handling is good, 45-48 MPG and roughly 400 miles per tank Question is: Do I keep the tires the way they are or buy 2 new tires?
The 185/65 is 0.26" larger diameter, which is a 1.06% difference in the diameter of those sizes. If the 195/60 were on the front, you would have a 1.06% built-in error to your mileage and odometer as it turns more in a given distance (1.06%). The 195/60 should wear 1.06% faster as well. I wouldn't worry about it. I'm 98.04% certain...
If you should find that the skid control ECU complains (via lighting up one or more of the following warning lights: VSC, ABS, BRAKE, ((!)), or the icon of a skidding car) then you would need to remedy the problem. Otherwise, you can operate the car in that condition.
No issues. The odometer difference is small as well. Just make sure when you rotate tires they stay together front or back. I tried plus size tiring on my Corolla a few years back going with 195 instead of stock 185 to get better handling. I started with 2 and put them on the rear. Turns out tires were too wide and rubbed when I go over potholes or speed bumps. Epic failure. I rotated the tires to the front to get rid of them as the front wears faster than the rear.
The traction control light (S curve light) has come on twice. Once while turning onto the street from a driveway(flooring it) and the second also "flooring it" at an onramp with a curve entering at highway speeds for a test drive. But, no other lights.
I have the same setup on my car. I had plus sized it a while back and I needed two new tires. I had a friend bring it in for me and the mechanic installed the correct tire size. Anyway, I just dealt with it but there are NO issues with handling or lights coming on. I think the difference is insignificant so it won't adversely affect the electronic nannies.
