Just bought a 2016 Prius C and been looking through the manuals and came across a reference to HD Radio. I looked at it on line and it appears to only be available in the US, not in Canada. Is this so? Thanks Richard
Yup. HD radio was in Canada in the early 2000s then was killed in 2012. Now it's kinda in an experimental phase where radio stations can broadcast in HD radio if they want to. Most stations are in the GTA. One in Calgary and one in Vancouver. Local HD Radio Stations | MyHDRadio You're in B.C. so here's the closest one HD Radio | News Talk 980 CKNW | Vancouver's News. Just wanted to thank you for your response to my post about HD Radio availability in Canada. I couldn't reply to your comment as I haven't been here long enough 2 more posts to go before I can reply to others on here.
Update I checked the link you sent and it listed 2 HD Radio stations in Vancouver. One was AM and the other FM.I don't know much about this yet so I'm assuming the HD is just using the frequency slot either AM or FM to broadcast digitally (?) One showed up as HD on the radio and the other didn't. Not much of an issue for me, I'm just going through the manual and trying to figure things out and I never heard of HD Radio before so asked the question. Thanks again. Richard
I assume you're talking about CKNW and Rock101? It appears they have the same parent company. Because HD radio allows broadcasters to have up to 4 channels within a frequency, in this case, you'll find both the AM and FM digital format in the FM frequency. Go to the full audio screen Tune to Rock101 Wait a few seconds for the digital signals to arrive. The headunit will automatically switch to the digital broadcast and you'll see HD) light up at the top left of the album art display. Locate the tiny "HD) 1 2 3 4" in the top left hand corner of the audio screen (excluding the station list. So it's top-left of the album art display) Press that and a menu pops up. Press HD 2 Now you're listening to that CKNW AM broadcast in digital format. Save the setting so you don't have to do all of that the next time. To save, press and hold the preset number you would like to save the station to.
Thanks again. I'll try that tomorrow. I looked at the stations signal footprint and we are just beyond it so not expecting too much. I'll try it and let you know. Richard
So, I was in the big city of Nanaimo today and tried the HD radio and I guess I'm just too far away to connect. I did get scratchy AM and faded FM. I guess its something to try the next time I'm in a really big city Thanks for all your help.
Well according to the map on the CKNW website listed above, its coverage is from Lions Bay to Abbotsford and just south of the U.S. border.
Looks like CHQM-FM has joined the HD Radio party in the Vancouver area. That website has been updated to reflect that.
