David Virginia PM Me Hello all, I'm new to the forums and trying to help out my father. He has a very well cared for 2009 Prius that the transmission just went out in so he needs to replace it. The car was towed to me and he asked me to see what could be done to part it out to help him out with some extra money to pay for its replacement. I'm not sure what market there is for such things, but I thought I'd offer it up here first. Its a complete car from front to back. Was dealer maintained and driven by an older retired guy who never even used the passenger or back seat. The interior is very clean and everything else is in good shape with the exception of the failed transmission. He doesn't do the online thing so I offered to handle this for him as the car is in my possession now. So, if anyone if looking for anything let me know. surely you don't have to part it out, just sell it as is. What's the mileage? With it being a 2009, I'm surprised the transaxle is fried
it has high mileage. Over 200k on it so I'm not sure there's much of a market for it as it sits. So he figured this would be a good way to make use of it.
It will take you a few days to sell that car for $1500+.....but if you part it out, it'll net you $1500 after many many months of taking off parts 1 at a time. The most valuable parts you have will be the front end, back end, and HV battery
Everything is worth money on the car.....just depends who's looking. I sold a gas tank today for $80.....and I never thought anyone would want that LOL
I've had it for sale as a whole locally for about two weeks now. Haven't gotten a single offer. Perhaps that is easier on the weeas
I've parted out entire motorcycles and it is A LOT of work. Here's some thoughts. The best (most efficient) way is how many commercial resellers do it: take good pics of each item and list it with a price along with a good description of the condition (if you say perfect, it damn well better be perfect, etc). This will GREATLY reduce unnecessary communication. Research prices and set yours in the middle with a "firm" condition or you'll be hammered with low-ball offers (you still will anyway but this will reduce it a lot). Be prepared to ship fast (have the necessary materials on hand), know your shipping charges and choices or stipulate pick up only. The latter will greatly reduce your market. Decide if you want to sell the wheels/tires because once they're gone, moving the car will become more difficult for you or a buyer. Lastly, put a new trans in it and keep it.
Well that just means the market thinks it's over priced. I'm not sure it would be that easy to get $2000 parting it out. There's not much value in the engine, and even less value with 200k+ miles on it. Like on my previous post, reduce it to $1500 and you probably would get a bite.
Thanks for the feedback. I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that this forum would be like all the other ones I've been a part of where there were always people looking for various parts to replace broken/worn out stuff on their cars. Maybe that is not the case, in which point I'll probably just don't the car as I don't really have anything invested in it anyway.
A co-worker sold his 06 for $2300 but it was running (sort of) and had a 2 year old toyota HV battery. The bad news was it had 300k, a/c was out, the brakes were malfunctioning (multiple warning lights) and the interior condition was horrible. He put it on CL for that price which I had suggested and it sold to a reseller.
This forum is the same......but being part of an online community, people compare what they can get from all over the online community resources. Selling it as an entire car will allow you to get a big chunk of money at once. Selling it piece by piece will leave you with a broken up car with lots of missing parts......and not much more money than if you would have sold it all intact. It's not like you can sell 1 suspension part or 1 wheel right? You still need to tow that damn thing away at some point. Ebay will probably net you the most money, selling 1 part at a time.
