I didn't know tires could effect mileage so much

I have Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max, they are the original OEM tires that came with the vehicle.

They have been OK. Good MPG's.

30,000 miles and I'm probably ready to replace.

Not very good at all in Snow or Ice.

 

When I swapped out my Bluearths for Michelin Energy Saver A/S (good tires on my Gen 2) and the Energy Savers were 2 to 3 MPG lower.

 

you can look them up at tire rack.com to get all the features. but tyres are a bit complicated, as you can find many threads here with problems, but few solutions. once you have decided, and have them installed, try to be patient, sometimes a few thousand miles of break in will help. and keep in mind, old worn tires have very little rolling resistance, and there's a mile or two per gallon you won't get back for a long time.

also a good idea to get an alignment, if you haven't had one. all the best!

 

New tires always lower MPG, regardless. They have to wear in. The dealers always under-inflate them too.

Wow. I was still getting 40mpg with Dunlop M3 Winter Sport skins. Down from 44mpg with the Proxes, but still respectable.

 

Good point, especially with the inflation factor. But, I have on some occasions got new tires, good for LRR, and mpg never skipped a beat.

I suspect tire retailers in particular play this up, hoping complainants will go away, try harder, forget.

 

Yes, I've never been disappointed in my mileage. It varies from mid to lower forties in winter with short drives, to 50+ in ideal weather and/or on long highway road trips. Of course, I'm Gen 3 Standard Prius.

I would say, The Goodyear Fuel Max Assurance, have been the best OEM tires I have ever owned.
Having said that?
In the past, the OEM tires that I had on other vehicles were HORRIBLE. So the bar is not set very high.
In the past, I had horrible performance from OEM tires, and usually had to replace them ASAP, always before 20K.
So I've been pleasantly surprised at the passable performance of the Goodyears, and actually being able to put 30K on them.

I'm judging the Goodyears in comparison to other OEM's I've had in the past.
I suspect if I compared them to any and all other tire possibilities, they probably wouldn't rank as the best.

They've been pretty good.
Really bad IMO in Snow and Ice. Luckily for me, that is an environment I seldom find myself having to drive in.

 

I'm in need of a new set of all season tires for my 2012 Prius V Five. The larger wheels definitely make things more expensive, but it is what it is. I'm trying to decide if more expensive LRR tires, like the OEM tires, will be worth the price premium. I'll be trading it in / selling it privately within the next two years.

42 front 38 back
58,000 miles still look good and 42 + mpg.

 

44mpg with Continental PureContact LRR 225/50R17 98V on our 2012 v Five at 40/38 F/R psi.
