I've written about this noise concern in a previous post. Most early gen 3 Prius' are making this clicking noise when turning, right while braking, under 30mph. I have had this issue for 30k miles. It is not subtle and happens every day under those conditions. Most say the axle is the fix. I bring it to a Toyota dealer, they were unable to duplicate the concern. So I end up going on a drive with a tech later. He confirms the clicking multiple times. Now a week later I get a call from the advisor saying that the tech could not diagnose it and he started blaming my driving style for the noise. It was too late to speak with anyone else at this time of day, so now I'm waiting until tomorrow. I have ext. warranty as well. Who should I speak with first? Service Mgr? Then from there if I don't get any help? Toyota? If anyone has any similar issues and had luck getting it taken care of, please shoot me a message or reply to this thread. I just want this fixed. Only utilizing one dealer? If so, why not try another dealer if you are not satisfied. Which dealer are you using?
I don't know about "most", never heard this. Build date Aug 09. Yeah get a second opinion, hope it gets sorted.
And the second dealer is saying the same as the first? I also thought there would be more than 2 dealers within a 2 hour drive in Los Angeles. If you have a written report from the tech that went for a ride with you, you could use that and call Toyota. Usually Toyota wants good documentation. How many miles on your Prius? You say this had been happening for the last 30 k miles. What have you done other than trips to the 2 dealers? Greased the slide pins? What is the pad thickness? Any debris or loose pieces like hub caps? Had any work done to the wheels or brakes 30 k miles ago or since?
There are a couple of threads covering this issue. It's covered under the powertrain warranty. 5 years 60k miles. If they say it's normal wear and tear CV Joint, then show them the same braking and turn but shift to neutral while doing it. The clicking noise will go away. If it's bad cv joint, it'll click even in neutral. Call Toyota and tell them the dealer refuse to fix the issue even under the extended warranty.
Thanks for the helpful reply. I did mention to the advisor and tech the issue and it does not happen in neutral. I let them know about this site and how many other owners had the same issue and it was the axle that fixed it. I was told he could not diagnose it-basically could not figure it out. This is not ok. Now I'm gonna have to fight to get them to move forward. I'm tired of these dealers.
I believe so too. I guess the service mgr will be getting a call today. I just don't understand how the tech on the road test that heard my concern is unable to diagnose it.
