Pure speculation but I assume when Toyota maxes out on their tax incentives, the price of the used prime will be higher since new users aren't getting any tax incentives?
that's a good point, i haven't heard it brought up before. unless toyota can get the price down even more by then.
The price of all used plug ins should come up when the incentive ends. Assuming the new model hasn't become cheaper, and/or better range.
The thing is unless they sunset the incentives, Toyota has many years of sales to go. Normally plug-ins are not holding value too well (maybe Teslas are) partially due to incentives. So this is quite wishful thinking.
The premise is The Market will pay more (the tax credit amount) for the new vehicle once the credit expires (many years from now based on current sales). If the manufacturer has to put the same amount of cash on the hood to move inventory the used car market won't be affected. There are two things working against the used EV market. First, the older the battery, the closer it is to needing a replacement. Second, as the performance of new vehicles improves no one is going to want to buy the older one without a deeper discount. What's a 2G phone worth? A 3G phone? For a Prime or an EV to hold value either the supply would have to be cut unexpectedly (like after an earthquake) or gasoline prices would have to spike (hurricane damage to refineries or damage to oil fields).
In Oregon it doesn't appear yet there are any tax incentives/rebates for the Prime. Confused on this. Yet we have no sales tax so that is something. Bend dealer has sold some but needs to come up to speed. No brochures except online. My Prime total price (MSRP) is at $35,084 but that does not include any maintenance package (to my knowledge), licensing, taxes, rebates, incentives, etc. What happens by January? Who knows? Patience or missed opportunity? Thank you.
Susan I see no OR incentives but tax free is important benefit. Federal benefit you would get about $4500 tax credit. I see no issue waiting til January, except some want to claim the Federal benefit this year. Right now supply is tight for the early sales. I'd expect more deals especially next Fall.
