Just checked my journey s with my AAA app ICE came on January 2nd so I added up the miles from the 2nd to today and it comes to about 63 miles Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Climate prep worked using heatpump I'm guessing. Did you continue to use the heatpump on the way to IHOP or ruff it? May have frosted up the evaporator and it switched to ICE heat if that was on. Evap temp needs to be 5 to 10 degrees lower than the outside temp to draw any heat adding more degrees of frost.
I believe the low temperature limit for the heat pump is 14F. If so this sounds like the ICE came on for cabin heating.
That would make sense except when I went to IHOP the outside temperature was 12 degrees and ICE did not kick in
Actually I stated the outside temperature of 14 degrees after charging at chargepoint for about an hour
Oops, I flipped the ICE on points. With a preheated cabin, the heat pump may have been able to maintain the temperature for the first part of the trip. Eventually, keeping the heat up in the cabin became a losing battle for it. Or this occurred.
Yup, probably what happened is the cabin and the battery area cooled down while I was in IHOP and did not sufficiently warm back up during the 2 to 3 mile trip to the Chargepoint location and the one hour charging (since you can't heat the cabin while charging)
Right. But you can also pre-heat via the Remote A/C button on your fob prior to getting into the car, right? so you can let it charge an extra 10 mins (the time limit of the pre-heat or pre-cool function)... you probably won't gain any miles (might lose a bit) since the battery is pre-heating the cabin but at least the car is off so the engine won't be on.
ok, true, but on that same token you can turn on remote climate from your phone and not even get out of your car, the chargepoint location I was at the consumers energy office was not open till 9:00 am ( the time when I finished charging) so no where to go to warm up.
Wait so I'm confused now because I mentioned the key fob early (remote A/C). So can you or can't you turn on the heater while the car is charging (without using climate prep) at a public charging station?
According to the owners manual, page 509, you can. If the Remote Air Conditioning System is used while the charging cable is connected to the vehicle, the reduction of charge in the hybrid battery (traction battery) will be suppressed to allow you to use elec- tricity from an external power source. Charging will be conducted automatically after the Remote Air Condition- ing System is stopped.
You do understand that it's a losing battle when it's 8 degrees outside, charging, then heating the car up, then back to charging while car rapidly cools off, then it's back to charging, it's probably better to wait till the car has finished charging then heat up the car after you unplug the cable.
I'm not sure what it said before it was badly translated from Japanese to English. Probably that using the climate while plugged in will reduce or even reverse battery charging.
