2008 Prius spare tire fastener broken

    I was recently trying to change the spare tire on my 2008 Prius and the fastener that holds it into the auxiliary compartment wasn't coming undone. Most likely, the threads are just corroded, but I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem and if there's an easy fix.

    Yes that's the right part. I didn't take it out yet because I couldn't hand-loosen it and I was worried vice grips would break the plastic. I'll definitely lube it once I get it out. Do you think white lithium or oil would be better? Thanks

    Maybe get some light oil in there and let it sit, say an hour. Tap it lightly with a hammer, might help work it in and/or jar it loose. Use something like Liquid Wrench or WD40, that'll penetrate; you might then be able to get it out intact. Then either grease or oil. I use a spray can of some oil that doubles as a rust-sealer, pretty much anything will do. Less messy than grease? Be cognizant that oiled threads may torque a lot easier, don't go nuts.

    If you get it off, anti seize compound works great and won't run like oil.
