A few times the dashboard display has flashed BRAKE! with a red background. One time I was driving over the speed limit down a big hill past a roadside radar speed display. This morning it happened I was driving maybe a little faster than the speed limit but didn't notice anything to cause it. So what does it mean?
It usually means that one of the sensors detects an object you might run into. Mine will flash if I'm cutting in to another lane and there is a differential in speed between me and the car in the lane I'm flashing by. It's on for a fraction of a second then disappears as soon as i clear the car. If you don't react to it it will apply the brakes. In my case no harm since I clear the "object" it sees.
That's has happen to me a couple of time when parking in the garage. Got a little too close too fast to one of the cardboard boxes stored next to the far wall in the garage. Brake indicator came on, and the car stopped ! Haven't hit the box yet !
How close before it applies the brakes? I have slowly approached a stopped car to see when it happens but lost my nerve and hit the brakes before the Prime does. Maybe the cardboard box would be a safer test.
I think it's also speed dependent. It's smart enough to know that the faster you go the less reaction time you (it) will have.
