Featured Can the height the hatch opens be controlled?

For now, twine. I am not aware of a Toyota supported option to limit how far the hatch moves.

I would probably look at an aircraft grade, stainless steel cable with loops at each end and swagged for the exact length. You'll need a quality machine shop or airport mechanic to make the part. Better still, visit an EAA meeting and ask for help ... bring cookies.

i glued foam to my garage door.

Swimming pool noodle cut in sections and attached to the inside of the garage door. Contact made, no harm, no foul.

 

if i did this, i would inevitably drive out with the hatch open.

 

I would probably put in reverse out of habit .

 

Here's what I did for our new RX450H:



The nice thing about the 450H is it has 4 preprogrammed settings for hatch height opening . Setting 1 was too high, so we have it on setting 2.

Not sure what the Prime has, but that is a nice feature. I did the pool noodle route as added protection, cause eventually the 12 volt will get disconnected and the settings will default and I'm not sure if this is one that will default (probably will).

I fell two noodles short of getting the hole door done.

 

That's using the old noodle!

 

Especially since they just happened to be "lying around".

I would hate to see what it would cost to repair the 450H . Just glad they were around and available.

Me too - but then it hit's our fluorescent-looking LED tube light fixtures

on the other hand, our new car has sensors on the hatch, so it'll only open so far as it deems to be close enough. Then, i sometimes bump my head on the partially open lid, trying to walk underneath it. Ah, the trials of living in the 21st century

 

Ours is 8' high - pretty much standard around here. Lights hang below that 8'. Maybe my 6'-5" has something to do with it?


I'd show off the knots on my head but it's not a pretty sight.

I'd be tempted to remove one of the struts (I think that the geek term is 'lift support") and see if you can find one whose stroke is an inch or two shorter.

There's probably already a non-OEM replacement part for the G4/Prime whose specs are known (i.e. 10" 40#) and usually the college grad student working at the auto parts big box store will let you try one before you buy it - or even help you replace it.

If you find a strut that reduces the hatch swing by just a few inches then you can share the data with your fellow cave-dwelling........'prime'mates.
