Actually, we owe the term 'grog' to the limeys....(another knot-ical term) Seems to have started when some Vice Admiral watered down the daily rum, and since he was wont to wear grogram (coarse weave silk/wool?) coats, the sailors called him "Old Grog"......probably behind his back.

We Americans have a somewhat apocryphal tale for "joe" as a nickname for coffee, taken after a former US Navy Secretary "Josephus Daniels" who in addition to being somewhat prudish, was a devout teetotaler.
He banned alcohol from all US Navy ships in 1914, an it was ruefully said that coffee (or....Joe) was thereafter the strongest beverage allowed on US Navy hulls.
Daniels had a somewhat famous under secretary who helped out.....

When I consider knotts.....I'm always thinking of the 3-minute rule, useful when you do the 'plot-label-DR' thing....or basic dead-reckoning navigation (unfortunately named.....)
6000' per mile makes for easier math for us poorly educated squids.... ;)
