Yes they melt away. It's called a belt molding. Best to replace all 4 doors at once

You can get them online, like parts department of camelback Toyota in Phoenix.

There's instructions in the package. Clips on in seconds

OK, for the benefit of anyone replacing theirs, the part numbers are:

    front left 75720-47021
    front right 75710-47021
    rear left 75740-47021

I replaced my driver's side belt weatherstripping on my 2011 GIII. I found instructions on YouTube for a GII but found better instructions (with pix) for the GIII on eBay at the bottom of the part item page:

I can't post a link to the eBay page, but if you search for the part number -- 75720-47021 (LH driver's side), you'll find the instructions by mainmanmanne which specifies no tools (unlike the YouTube video). It took me under 10 minutes, using just my hands. There's a cover in the door front interior over the outside mirror mount; gently pop that cover off and then you can pop the belt weatherstripping off to start the removal. Gently work it our from front to back, where the clip is. I then took my time and very gently worked the clip out. Installation was a reverse process, beginning with the clip and then gradually seating it from rear to front. Last step is replacing the mirror mount cover.

Thank you for listing this!!! I've spent more time than I expected trying to find part numbers! (For those searching: outside window molding, window weatherstrip, parts numbers)

The ones on the left side of my Prius deteriorated into a gummy mess like elderly rubber bands. I bought replacements from the local dealer, which matched internet prices (for the first and only time).

You should just change the right side too, they will soon be the same as the left side. I had to replace all 4, drivers side was the first to go

I suspect the left ones died first beause they got a lot more direct sunshine. The dealer parts guy said the part number reveals a design update, which I hope means the new ones are made of better material.
