If I enter my vehicle on Costco site, it shows both the v and w speed rated tires, which I believe means they're ok to install either. Note again: the w speed rating is higher. Also note, the price is lower, and the tread life warranty is significantly less. I'm not sure what this all adds up to. My main concern is the w's rolling resistance might be compromised, but grasping at straws.
My son got Costco tires last year for his 2015 Prius v. He had very few choices because they said they would only match the original speed & load ratings even though the speed rating was ridiculously high.
I was running the Bridgestone Ecopia 422 plus , and although they were great for fuel mileage , the had WAY too much road noise for me . They eventually drove me crazy and after waiting for 10,000 miles for them to break in and quiet down , I ended up pulling them. Had them for about a year, and they never got quieter, just louder ! I switched out to the Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus (which is also a LRR tire) , and they are worlds and away a better tire than the Ecopias . Milage is pretty close to the same , maybe lost 1 mpg , but hard to tell that for sure cause its so minor. They have a MUCH more comfortable ride, handle better , are MUCH quieter , and wear like iron ! Pretty good in the snow too . We have these on our Subaru Legacy as well , and I am pretty sure we are up to about 50k on them, and they are still showing minimal wear (on an AWD car !) . We are also getting 28-30 MPG on our AWD Subaru with these tires . Not bad . Glad I made the switch after trying out the Ecopias ! The Turanza Serenity Plus tires are great on my Prius (and our Subaru) .
Cool! The Japanese Ecopia 422 plus tires on my Gen 4 are noisy too, even after 14K miles. I will probably just drive them until they need replacing though.
Funny you have the serenity plus! I actually got those first, they destroyed my mileage so much I returned them to Costco and got the 422 plus. Much happier but odd our two experiences were so different. I agree the Turanza serenity plus are a bit quieter and handle better, but not worth the trade off in mpgs in my case.
Several years ago my gen 2 was really noisy and turned out to be a wheel bearing. When you had it in your hand and spun it, it didn't seem bad but after changing it all was quiet.
I put 20k on the primacy. Much much happier with them. The ride was quieter in my opinion. Mpg was better as well. Although I didn't keep the premiers long enough to evaluate that. Either tire will be fine. The older I get, I just think about things to much. Buy em' enjoy em' I sold the Prius and bought a used Lexus RX 400 SUV hybrid. (Needs new tires now!) Good luck with your tires!
You could also try Club Lexus . We have a 2017 RX450h and I hang out in the 4th gen RX forums there. Good luck with the new to you RX.
Thanks! I love it so far. Bought a one owner 2006 with 60k miles. It's sooooo nice to drive! And it's paid for lol!!
I did not mean to scare you away! Your wealth of Prius knowledge did not just disappear! Besides, we have a Lexus forum here too.
Here's a long running thread about various brand tire noise. More than the various brand noise levels, the "new" quiet pavements being laid down on American (other countries?) roads are stunningly remarkable. These quiet pavements are most advantageous to small (un-insulated?) vehicles. Coupled with the best companies, who lay down extremely smooth pavement, small cars experience smoothness & quietness, never encountered 15 years ago. Because these pavements give small (cheap?) cars the greatest boost in pleasure, it is understandable why these quiet pavements do not gain great amounts of news-worthiness. As a user of used tires, I noted this pavement characteristic with many different brand tires. I recently mounted no-longer-produced Goodyear Eagle GTs on my 2013 Elantra front wheels. Instantly, I noted pleasure in the increased electric steering "pointablity" (a story in itself). Also noted on a very small minority of pavements, was the low frequency grumble of the Eagle GTs, along with a trace of unsmoothness(?) from the GTs, which never occurred with other tires. In reviews of Goodyear Eagle GTs, noise was often a complaint (one reason they aren't produced, anymore?). However, the Eagle GTs, running on smooth "quiet" pavements, were SPECTACULARLY quiet & smooth. These Eagle GTs are the best on said pavements.
