Well, dont know, if this right place to post this though. I have being wondering, what actually rachets up the mileage of Prius cars. I do know that for conventional cars, its the VSS om the transmission. But if you known a PHEV, or BEV, what do you think contributes to the odometer reading? Is it the engine, or what?
Prius and most of newer (including conventional) cars just use the speed from wheel speed sensors. In a gen 2 Prius skid control ECU calculates the speed from wheels speed sensors. It then sends that information to combination meter that then sends the information to other components.
@Elektroingenieur could probably tell us. I suspect it is sensors on the wheels or transaxle output shafts that provide the signal that is converted into distance traveled.
You can just look it up on the manual. It does use the wheel speed sensors. On the combination meter diagram there’s an arrow from Skid Control ECU with vehicle speed signal marked on it. On the diagram of Skid control ECU there’s an arrow from wheel speed sensors. There’s also an arrow to combination meter with vehicle speed signal marked on it.
