Don't forget Audi/Porsche/VW as they've already developed their competing product - AND stated next year as their release date for their tesla Competition ... which is always a good thing. .
The established luxury market has lost a chunk of market share that will take them at least some time to reclaim if they are successful. Tesla is chomping at the next lower segment down with the Model 3. Glad to have them around. Adapt or decline. It’s a healthy shakeup for the establishment. But I don’t think hope is lost for most players.
What chunk. Tesla market share is very small compared to the entire industry. Has the luxury market lost some sales to Tesla, sure but in the big picture non of the big players are feeling it. Mercedes, Lexus and BMW are always in the top 3 in sales of Luxury cars.
If they have plenty of money, why didn't they develop a mass market BEV 10 years ago? At this point none of them have shown a commitment to be a leader in the BEV market with all that money. What they are showing is tired, old ICE envelops with batteries in them ( Mini, Fiat 500, Jag I Pace, Soul, etc.) If they have all that money, where is their breakthrough design and technology? At this point, all they are doing is putting a bandaid on a cut to the jugular. And where is their charging infrastructure? They are 10 years behind and falling behind further every month that goes by. I am looking forward to it too! When will that be? - 2020, 2022, 5 years from now? All of them have concept cars that are due out, "any day now." Are you willing to bet money they will be out next year? The price point of the Audi/Porch BEVs are aimed at the model S. Where is their model 3 competition? And will they be building 18,000 charging stations worldwide by "next year" to match Tesla? Where are their battery producing Gigafactories? Weren't the new LEAF and Bolt supposed to be model 3 killers? So far they are both, "swing and a miss" as far as sales go. Where are the 500,000 pre-order reservations at $1000 each for all of these cars? These guys are going to be playing catch up for a long time. I welcome competition. It will make Tesla a better company and it will make the world a more healthy place to live. So far, the legacy automakers have shown they don't have the vision to compete with Tesla.
Next 12 to 18 months, Tesla will be feeling the Presure. Mercedes already has an all EV full size SUV in Mexico. Not sure what is wrong with the Soul, Fiat? They are priced for the average American. We live in the Orange Bubble! Not everyone in California or USA can afford a $35k Car. So I welcome the Fiat, Leaf, Soul, so that the average Americans can also be driving an EV if they want. Tesla is catering to the Luxury market. They don't want to be considered a middle class car. If they did they would have cars priced as the Fiat or Soul. Why did the Pruis do so well. It was priced for the average American. It was not till Hollywood embraced the Pruis that it became a car for affluent.

No it's not. Maybe for Orange County CA, but not for Orange County Florida or many other parts of the US.
I'm posting this in Mexico right now, a very affluent area, and I don't see one BEV. The MBZ dealership is right down the road from me. They have never heard of a MBZ EV. There is no public place to charge a BEV where I am located in Mexico other than home. What chunk! Fiat and Soul are compliance cars. Fiat chairman said they lose $17,000 on every 500e they sell. They have no range. They advertised almost 100 mile EPA range. My daughter leased a 500e last year for $50 a month from an OC dealer (that is not a typo) because they were willing to give them away to clear their lots. She is lucky to get 50 miles range in everyday driving. So it is just a get to work and grocery car. She has to borrow a car to visit us, 75 miles away. What chunk! The model 3 is priced less than a comparably equipped Prius. My 2012 Prius plug-in AT had a sticker price of $40,000, 6 years ago and it is hardly a luxury car. Toyota does not want to be considered a middle class car or otherwise they would have BEV cars priced like a Fiat or Soul. What chunk! Shouting much? I thought you said "luxury car" sales. Every MBZ car built is a "luxury car"? including the trucks, buses, Smart, and mini-me cars? Better throw in MBZ brand vacuum cleaners into the statistics too!
in the last few days there have been many news articles on how Mercedes is going full force into the BEV market and will have cars and SUVs out in 2018 and 2019. My error it's a hybrid not full EV. Mercedes-Benz México : GLE 500 e plug-in hybrid Mercedes in USA was number one in sales too. Sorry if Tesla only had one model to offer.
Actually they had 5 models for sale in 2017 - model S. model X, model 3, Gen II roadster, Tesla Semi. Why would you be sorry about that? Do you want to see them fail? And what BEV cars would those be? And where will they charge? Why didn't they do this 10 years ago?
Model 3 was out but not in big numbers, Gen II the same. Trucks have yet to be built? I have nothing against Tesla, but I don't buy all the hype for Tesla either and most of Wall Street is watching with a careful eye. I wish Tesla well, but I see the competion being able to catch up with Tesla pretty fast, and their pockets are a lot greener. Fresh from scratch designs and models. Google to read more. Big oil and world governments were against it, which is why GM killed EV1.
The number of model 3s delivered in Jan. 2018 has exceeded all of 2017 deliveries. The Gen II roadster as sold out the 1000 founders editions for $250,000 up front deposits. The Semi has sold several thousand to major truck companies and prototypes are driving on California streets right now. Yeah, like Wall Street is a good predictor of anything! I wish the "competition" had come out with a viable BEV 10 years ago with all those green pockets. Actually, they have been in the pockets of big oil all those years and still continue to be. And that's all they are is scratch concept designs and models. I wonder which big oil and world government that would be?
In 10 years, if this site is still around, we can look back at this thread and laugh about it! Enjoy the model 3. I am going to go drive my out of date Prius, until we are forced to get rid of our cars as we know them now (including Tesla) and take an Uber or Lyft pod to work.
No other company is serious about EV production until they: A. Start manufacturing their own batteries. That is one of the biggest costs of an EV. Can you imagine current car companies never producing their own engines? B. Actually figure out the charging infrastructure for their vehicles. It can't be overstated how much of a lead Tesla has in this area. All arguments about Tesla should ultimately come back to this topic. Charging infrastructure is everything and until you have owned an EV you won't fully understand this.
According to the Dashboard thread, the Model 3 sold more than the Prime. I guess the Prime are not selling in big numbers either.
I repeat .... VW/Porsche/Audi will be the 1st to take a crack at Tesla - both automotive & charging infrastructure. AND - driving home yesterday .... a mission E Porsche BLEW by me all covered up in a camouflaged wrap. i recognized its shape from numerous pictures ... just barely had time to click a shot So, they'll be here soon - 2019 .
It has been proposed that Porch and Oddi EVs will be at or above MS price points, which really limits their market. VW is probably 2 or 3 years away. I welcome their arrival, the more the merrier, but they will hardly be 'Tesla killers.' Do those companies have charging infrastructure under construction to be ready in a year? Where would those 18,000 superchargers be found?
