cyberpriusII "at minimum" install Malwarebytes free and run it manually once a day...assuming you are on the web everyday.

Been using free version of MalWareBytes for years. I do not run it everyday, but I seldom do anything at all that would be considered any sort of risk.

Am thinking of putting out the $75 and getting the lifetime MWB premium license, though.

Have two laptops running windows 7,malware got both of them and demanded ransom to go away, they had control, put w10 on one at a time and no more ransomware, windows defender now works.....on w10 and it's more than adaquate to handle all threats, it's your 75$ but it's your 75$ not theirs.

BTW, mwb occasionally put out offers which are excellent value should you be prepared to hang on for a while. You might have to allow their notifications on order to receive the offer though, YMMV.

is what I used when I ran windows
it was a no brainer-for me having 3 machines.
There wiki for removal of real nasties is a bit technical for the average user
but these days you can usually find a forum that will give beginner instructions as
well as reach deep into the windows registry hive to dig out deep and subtle infections.

I'm also looking for a m vci and if I find one that works I'll let ya know if you still need one.;)

F-Prot is what my company ran, back in the early eighties, and I used it on home pc's for a while. I believe it was a free download for personal use. Not sure if that's still the case. Good to hear they're still in business.

I've been using BitDefender since upgrading our pc's to Windows 10, fwiw.

$75 for a lifetime license seems cheap considering they charge $40 for a year and $70 for two years-- but not so fast..

Considering you can purchase all manner of lifetime software for around $70-$80, it seems MWB is on the high end. Are they worth it?

Arguably, if they save you from a nasty bit of malware, I suppose yes. But, ever since my kids left the house and quit downloading from torrent sites, I have had no problems -- except my AV did alert on TechStream LOL>

I guess a lot of software makers are going to the pricey annual route. Microsoft has sure been trying with Office, but I don't think it worked out too well for them.

F-Prot -- gosh do not think I have heard of them since the 90s...Good product IIRC>

Hmm! First, Malwarebytes is not an antivirus program and should not be used as one. Value for money; I don't don't think you'll do better than Kaspersky or Norton but it's worth get the internet security suite of each. Personally, I use Comodo I.S. but it's renowned for pushing potentially unwanted programs with the download, so I'd not recommended it to the basic computer driver.

I went from Norton (Internet Security) to BitDefender when I upgraded to Win 10. Norton would not even run, and their (boiler room) "tech support" was an abysmal joke.

McAfee is around here. I wouldn't take a job there, since every cable TV provider gives that POS with their internet service. Definitely worse than what I do now.

When I went on MWB site this morning to check their prices, I was surprised to see that they now state that MWB premium does indeed replace AV programs for home computers. Shrug.....got me.

Sorry you had probs with Norton, Mendel. Can't say I remember any myself but it was before Windows 8 and I just finished 2 years of Kaspersky on 3 machines. Tried Bitdefender as it's always treated 5* in reviews, but I found it to be not very user friendly and binned it after a month.

Kaspersky is not evil, but their security suite is paranoid...on your behalf. Not a bad thing.

Agreed! It's pushed out with lots of new machines over here and it's always a PUP as far as I'm concerned.

I've seen that also, but I think they're jumping on the wagon as it's rolling AFAIK. Too new to validate IMHO.

Yeah it was "fine" when I was running Win 7, though maybe a "fools paradise"? I recall a couple of gotchas:

    1. After Norton installed, if I moved it's Start Menu items, from the root directory to some sub-folder, it "broke" the install. Totally buggy, I would be on the phone with tech support for hours, with no good outcome, finally discovered this bug myself. I could reliably "unbreak" it, by moving that sub-folder's content back to the root of the start menu, lol.

    2. One time, it kept repeatedly saying the software was out-of-date. With uninstall/reinstall it would be fine, for maybe a day, then the cycle would repeat. On the phone with their good ol' tech support, they would walk me through the aforementioned uninstall/reinstall (took at least an hour, every time), which would dismiss the issue, for another day or two. FINALLY found out the problem:

A few weeks previous my wife needed to check a date, clicked on the time/date icon, navigated back/forth a month or two, and clicked ok to close. Which changed the system date. So a bonehead Windows design, coupled with Norton inept support...

Commiserations. I have been screwed by the m$ failures so many times now, I wish I had the cash and the energy to leap into the dark side with open source.

Ubuntu is typically the most user friendly distro for Windows users. I need to do the same thing, but it's harder on laptops.

I haven't worked with Linux since I did a Master Certificate in Network Security and Cyberforensics in the Oughts. That was great fun.

No formal qualifications myself and neighbours/friends are less informed than me. Was an IT manager for a small military unit back in Windows 3.1 days but the wheel has been reinvented too many times by M$$ since then. Just a passive interest nowadays and I hardly keep pace with with the industry. Best if somebody like you moved into the street!
