Transmission Failure!

Once you hear back from the dealer today, make sure you write/take down any trouble codes (DTCs and INFs) before grabbing your wallet back and running out the door

Pretty sure the dealer will find everything that needs 'fixing', which means there is a possibility that it could be something else in addition to the tranny.

 

Would the dealership be willing to install a salvaged transmission? I'm wondering, is there any policy on this.

 

If you're nearby the dealer, swing over and pick up a copy of the repair quote and any supporting diagnostic write up that you might've paid for (or will be soon). Make sure the diagnostic papers include the DTC/INF codes.

Who is doing the used tranny R+R, the dealer or the independent mechanic?

Damper assembly looks like a clutch plate, and goes between the ICE and the Transmission.

I don't see one in the Ebay listing above, but your vehicle has one.

Does the dealers 6.8k quote list the part on the work order as a needed part, if not then it might be possible to use the old one?

Jerkiness could mean either the windings in the trans are shorted or the inverter has issues. Once it gets to that burned area inside with the rotor/ stator of the windings it is met with resistance. One way to check this is to disconnect trans and inverter at certain steps when pushing vehicle in neutral to narrow trans or inverter assembly. Good luck.

 

No, no it will not. Salvage titles apply ONLY to Insurance Claims, not mechanical repairs. That is unless some state just passed a bill that changed it.

 

That is 100% normal when installing "experienced parts".... LOL!

 

There have a few differential failures on this site over the years. The posts always say "grinding" noise.

Luscious garage discusses a bearing that fails also. Very few failed windings posts. I would imagine the differential section failure is fluid issues like it ran low on trans fluid from leaking usually by a blown inner cv joint beating the crap out of the diff section and the seal fails where the inners enter the trans. You will see fluid leaking out where the inner shaft enters the differential section of the trans.Side of trans will be wet if leaking unless it all leaked out. If so its been grinding for a while.

Are you having drivibility issues like vibration in the steering or clicking sounds going around corners? Or really bad corrosion on the front suspension?

This trans is so reliable I am suspicious other forces are at work to make it fail. Hate to see you put a new trans in and it fails again.

Look for red fluid leaking down under. Post pictures of what you see under there.

That’s just about right. Very good.

So next thing that may get you is the engine oil. The car is old and like most old things require more maintenance.
Check the engine oil frequently and keep it at the full line. . One good low oil event will damage the engine.
Check the oil every Saturday before you start the car. It’s most likely eating some oil find out how much. How often do you change the oil and what kind of oil do you use?

Also take your car to any good tire shop preferably the place you buy your tires and they will give you free estimate on front end. Have them look at the cv joints and the front end. Tell them you hear clicking.

When my 2005 transmission went out the dealership gave me the same 6,500 dollar price. I asked if they could put in a used one and they said yes, found to transmission for me, and installed it. Transmission was 600, labor was 750. That was three years ago and no problems since. No warranty though, so if it dies on the way home from the dealership that's just your bad luck.
