It's natural to worry that major components might fail, and cost a fortune to replace. But I've just seen an inverter assy from a 2015 Yaris (Prius C) on ebay UK for only £180.00 - from a car that has done less than 7000 miles! Thats less than the cost of a service (£295 at my nearest dealer) - so is it worth paying a fortune to a main stealer, for servicing, just to keep the warranty going???? I would just ensure any recall work is done, do the basics myself. This was one of my first questions when I joined this board: Doing your own maintenance | PriusChat Our 2010 for example had a software update, to better protect the inverter during hard acceleration. I don't think it would take Perry Mason to dispute that doing your own oil change caused inverter failure. I like that inverter price btw, food for thought. I'm immediately skeptical about the 7000 miles, basically because it would be so easy to fudge. OTOH, the appearance is very clean, no corrosion, good sign. And has all the cables as well.
I've noticed this on a lot of other cars. When the car is new parts prices are cheap. Nobody really needs them yet, so the demand drives the price down. I've seen a lot of parts on the local craigslist here for good prices, and thought about stock piling them now. I'm averaging 1000 miles a week commuting to and from work, so I'm sure I'll need them sooner than later as things wear out.
Just be thankful it isn’t whole cars. My old man has that problem . But they eventually come in handy. That’s what I’m told frequently anyway.
Thankfully there are woods that shield the rusty lawn art from plain view. Otherwise the 18 or so vehicles would be very visible and they’d be “that neighbor”. But working on thinning the herd before it becomes my problem .
I've got 9 Cars at my shop now, so few more parts aren't going to even be noticeable. What's Pops got? Anything 80's Toyota? I could help move some of his collection to mine if so!
He’s in Pennsylvania, so not close. It’s mostly old American iron: 2 Dodge D200’s, Jeep FC170 along with a Jeep FC150 donor parts rig 2 Jeep J20’s International B130 My old Jeep Cherokee he uses for parts for his 2000 Cherokee This excludes all the other equipment surplus like tractors, elevators, and snow machines 2 old Datsun pickups You got a shop, eh ? Complete with a lift ? Been looking for a place to do some work other than our 2 car garage in suburbia. Keep me posted.
The 2 old Datsun Pick ups sound interesting. and yes I have a shop, but no lifts. It's not permanent enough to make that commitment. We were in San Jose where we both have our day jobs, until the car collection out grew the shop space we were renting there. Looking for automotive space around the bay area is close to impossible. After we were close to a month past our original move out date I got fed up and jumped on Sacramento Craigslist and found the place out in Dixon. Since it was a work/live place it worked out to be pretty cheap and is also why I bought the C. 1000 miles a week commuting sucks though, and I was pretty burned out on the bay area before that, so yeah. No lifts or any permanent types of installs here. lol
