The TSS Upgrade 2.0 is reported to coming out in later 2018 models. This upgrade will include a “lane keeping” capability (rather than just a monitoring function). Does anyone know if this “upgrade” will be offered as an “upgrade” for previous compatible models (e.g., those with TSS 1)? Thanks.
Only Toyota could say for sure, of course, but they generally make software updates available only to correct defects, not to add features, so I wouldn’t expect it. Depending on what’s involved, I suppose TSS 2.0 could be added to the fourth-generation Prius in a future model year, without waiting for a full model change. As I wrote before: it’s still the basic pattern in the auto industry that vehicles are not expected to receive enhanced capabilities after delivery; if you want a better car, you’re expected to buy the new model.
Agreed - particularly with something like "lane keeping" - which could be much more than just a software update - could involve different steering/sensing components as well. I've never known a manufacturer to do anything other than correct problems with existing cars.
I don't know what toyota's plans are, just here to point out that you can do the lane keeping monitoring with a sensor package only. Correction requires a different steering column & rack equipped with an actuator and sensors. If your car does not already have some form of automatic steering, then this would never be a software upgrade. You'd have to change out some hardware.
Except he's asking if the car is already equipped with TSS-P 1.0, can it upgraded to 2.0. I'm guessing no since the Avalon is launching with TSS-P 1.0 (the Corolla Hatchback will be the first one with 2.0) and apparently the development of the Avalon was such, that it started before TSS-P 2.0 development started so the Avalon was designed to house TSS-P 1.0 I'm not privy to the specifications of the two systems so I don't know if it's just software or if it's hardware development. Software upgrade will require calibration for that specific vehicle so unless Toyota intends to spend time and money to recalibrate old cars so that they can upgraded to 2.0, it's probably not going to happen.
Right, I'd understood the 1.0 to be a beep-advisory only system where 2.0 could actually manipulate the steering wheel.
Next generation of TSS is based on different hardware. If I am not mistaken it has gained dual camera system. All other components, like steering rack components, are already available in Gen4 Prius. Actually were available in Gen2 already (with Intelligent Parking Assist).
Toyota’s press release from last November mentions “Reduction of the size of the unit to improve ease of installation,” but it also says, “The second-generation Toyota Safety Sense being rolled out in 2018 will continue to utilize the single-lens camera and millimeter-wave radar currently used in Toyota Safety Sense P.”
All Australian 2016 PRIUS' have Lane Departure warning - and what they call "Steering Assist" which will nudge the wheel in the direction of a correction.
No. There is steering adjustments in both. The difference is that TSS-P's version is just a "steering assist" system so it nudges you back. On the Gen 3, it was an active lane keep system (hence the name Lane Keep Assist). Below 50mph, it just beeped at you like LDW (but no steering adjustment). Above 50mph, it will actively keep you centred in the lane and if you drift out of it (e.g. going around a corner and you didn't move the steering wheel), it will nudge you back but it wasn't smart enough to stop at centre so sometimes, it will ping pong (this is assuming you were just testing the system and not touching the steering wheel. Of course a normal person would correct and the system will just assist in that correction). In gentle corners, it does actually steer around it.
May depend on the country - all Australian cars do, and I believe UK and EU did as well. Possibly some US models didn't??
yes you can, by replacing car computer to 2020 , or replace any device in the car that has Toyota safety sense 2.0 data and it should work if the hardware is the same thank you vip11 @live.ca
