methinks it is a political problem, leading to a taxpayer problem. i don't think toyota engineers are slouches. i suspect toyota does not want to lose face at this point, but will eventually give up when the tax dollars run out. or maybe it is working well in japan?
it'd seem equqlly apropos to reference this as an engineering fact - a hope of overcoming limitations of physics. just like flying cars or cold fusion ..... try & try and try, as though there were Limitless taxpayer dollars to continue dropping down the black hole of hope. Consider the comments of Toyota's head of Mirai engineers - saying Elon Musk is correct, when he stated hydrogen is dumb; Toyota Mirai Chief Engineer Says Musk's Right About Electric Cars To make an analogy - consider WW II Admiral Yamamoto (tasked with engineering the destruction of the US fleet), who knew that attacking the US was insanity. After pearl harbor He said; He lived just long to see the reality of his self fulfilling prophecy - as a group P-38's swarmed in for the kill. That's another example of an engineer who knew the score, but leadership insisted on going forward anyway. Good luck with that. .
that is a great article, and the editors notes are very telling. as long as governments keep forking over cash, toyota will keep taking it. hey, who wouldn't?
a couple days ago, I was helping my wife put up Realty signs & noticed this Honda hydrogen car parked right in front of us; It has no registration stickers because it's a government car. To our good fortune, the driver came out of his house, & we recognized him as one of our elected officials. He explained that the fuel cell manufacturers give them such killer fleet lease deals, it would be insanity for them to be turned away. With that in mind, one quickly understands how it is that the manufacturers continue to brag that they are moving product. (shaking head) .
