Those are people that were on the reservation list, and were searching two years ago. The i8 searches are those unwilling to wait for a Model 3.
When a state (ANY state) is charted as having more searches for the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, then any other EV, you know that either that state has a screw loose, or the entire chart itself does. And now that the model 3 is cranking out 1,000's & 1,000's of units per week, the whole "which state has the most" thing is pretty much devoid of accuracy - per @Trollbait 's - multiple years old chart observation. .
Since the original article talks about (tailpipe) emission-free driving, the inclusion of the i8 with its eye-popping 13 mi EPA electric range into this research is probably not the best idea. On the same note, they probably should have used the word "Plug-In" instead of "EV", which covers both BEV's and PHEV's.
.... & just heard of the EV1, as well - being way behind the times. Seems like also - many of the states that are fond of the i8 are also the states that have fewer EV proponents. .
The point is, what are people buying, and we know what people are buying at this time, Tesla Model 3. It is irrelevant what Internet searches people perform. People perform Internet searches for all kinds of things for all kinds of reasons.
