Source: EIA: US refineries running at near-record highs - Green Car Congress US refineries are running at record levels in response to robust domestic and international demand for motor gasoline and distillate fuel oil, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). For the week ending 6 July 2018, the four-week average of US gross refinery inputs surpassed 18 million barrels per day (b/d) for the first time on record. . . . California has already shown that when there are insufficient refinery capacity, fuel prices and shortages can spike prices up and lead to gas lines. Bob Wilson
The next big concern for fuel prices is the switch to low sulfur fuel for ships. IIRC, that happens next month.
At least this thread got @bisco an avatar! That is long time coming. Looks like a white Gen4. @All Keep in mind gasoline is now 10% ethanol (perhaps 7% on energy basis). So record gasoline throughput does not necessarily mean record amount of raw gasoline from the refineries. Buit it certainly approaching that. But we need to realize world population is rapidly growing and quickly becoming more developed. At some point we probably need to get a grip on that reducing CO2 globally is a longer term goal. Whereas as we love tell people Big Oil is working night's and weekend's to kill EV's, actual truth is probably closer to they may need more. EV's and hybrids to hold the line. I do not think anyone wants to build new USA refineries, for very different reasons, but same outcome.
If the tight shale oil is a long term supply, we need new refineries to efficiently refine it. Much of our refining capacity is for heavy, sour stuff, like from Venezuela. Right now, the shale oil producers have to sell it below market in order to for those refineries to take it.
According to this link Sunoco shut down one of it's refineries in the US. Sunoco shuts down a refinery | PriusChat This one started in 2009, did I miss something?
Nah old refinery. I wanna say it was orig Texaco Eagle point... our first apartment complex less than mile away. Shut down. Directly at Philly but on the other side of Delaware Rver in South Jersey.
I recall it being a Sunoco and Coastal refinery. The last time I drove by it on 295, it didn't look like anything was going on there.
Reminds me of this, a single well frac makes as many emissions as 80,000 cars make in a year, I guess driving antique off road machinery on high sulphur #4 diesel will do that.
