a lot of people have. there is autobeyours in indiana, and texas hybrid batteries in dallas. if you can find someone to rebuild it, you will still need an installer. there is a gen 2 youtube video, it is time consuming.
If there is no "check engine" light on, it should pass emissions testing (smog) without a working speedometer. You may need to point out to the tester that the "check engine" light is located on the right side. Using a cell phone app for speed is a good work-around.
Two days ago the orange light went on, system malfunction I thought It was the battery check?? Is that the checkbook engine? Just my luck.
call them and ask. but again, i don't know if they do gen 3. another option is eBay, there might be someone there, i don't know. or salvage, but i don't know what you do about the odometer.
It's just especially upsetting to me because the car was not under my care when it happened and was returned to me in this condition. Sad.
And I don't plan on buying a new car anytime soon and I've had Superbad experiences with older used cars. Can't have unreliable cars when your a mom and have kids to drive around.
Another weird detail, the purple trip circles seem to show up on the left side though I have no idea how to read them.
