They've invested a lot into batteries and EVs. Nissan may not want to admit they screwed up with battery cooling, or sell a BEV in Japan, but the investment also supports their FCEV program.
as good an excuse as anyone else could conjure up. Equally as likely, they were going to put out their next gen with the same flimsy thermal management (lack thereof) - or only slightly better, & realized many plugin buyers are on to their lack of liquid cooling shenanigans. it never crossed my mind - but someone here recently pointed out Nissan's early EV entry / position might have been because there was no competition, & whatever they sold, regardless of its (yet to be proven) quick capacity loss - was the only game in town. Still having a copy of their warranties boilerplate, one can't help but notice how seriously they took their disclaimer, that there was no guarantee how much capacity loss there would be. Yea - they obviously knew that these pigs were going to grenade in short order when operated and charged in the handful of South Western States. With all the other offerings out there now, not to mention the ones quickly coming online, Nissan may not even want to bother anymore. As far as their plug-in, they have scuttled their own reputation, not too dissimilar from GM - when in the early 70s they releases the Vega - which was lucky to make it to 2K miles before they would grenade. Japan raised the quality bar, back then - & GM / Ford et al had to follow suit just to survive. .
