what prevents a careless driver from driving off while still plugged in? I know dashboard and blue lights flash. Will the car go into reverse or drive if still charging? Hope not. I have kids in a hurry and I could seee disaster. Surprised not more prominent in manual. Thx!!!
Have you actually tried starting the Prime while it is currently charging? Maybe try that and report back before getting all "charged up" about a situation that might not be possible. Or you could read page 132. Gas cars. Those can start with a gas nozzle inserted. That would be bad. Toyota has your back when charging.
It isn't possible to drive away. SAE J1772 (the charging protocol) prevents vehicle movement while connected.
I'm Which says, ■ Safety functions ●The hybrid system will not start while the charging cable is attached to the vehicle, even if the power switch is operated. ●If the charging cable is connected while the “READY” indicator is illumi- nated, the hybrid system will stop automatically and driving will not be possible. ●When the charging cable is connected to the vehicle, the shift position can- not be changed from P to another position.
That makes me wonder what would happen if you plugged in a charging cable while the car was rolling? Anyone want to test it? Calling Bob Wilson @bwilson4web
On most vehicles, doesn't work. This is known because people wanted to add extra battery capacity to these vehicles. For example the Nissan Leaf, people experimented with an additional 24KWh pack attached. The easiest method was to feed the pack in through the OBC (On Board Charger) which would handle the charging of the main battery. I believe it was found that it wouldn't work. The CHAdeMO port remained operational but not the J1772 port. This led to people feeding the extra pack in through the regenerative brakes.
Thx for those who answered. Helpful. As for the small amount of snark I interpret from David A, I’m sorry I don’t appear that bright. First night of ownership, a lot to take in. I charged in garage and preferred to not to start inside and try. I looked for it in the charging section of manual and couldn’t find it. So thank you for reference. FWIW, I know from hybrid reefer trucks, that drive offs do happen. So not as odd as it may seem. And it ain’t pretty. Glad it can’t happen here. They make a new connection system called safe connect for reefer trucks to avoid driver error and arching. Different deal, same concept
