Ray’s? A proud supporter of Tampa Bay, or just the best name out there? Why not root for one of the longest streaks to end this year. Since Chief Wahoo has been removed, what better way to celebrate than with a pennant and World Series . Believeland.
NBA junior varsity@80. Been wondering how to feel about this comment. It seems to conflict with my perception that college basketball (at any level) is mostly populated by folks who will have non-sports careers, but who've also had this high-effort, high-stress personal bonding experience* that may very well impact their future human interactions beyond sports. For me this seems quite different from any professional sports. *My impression (from outside) is that military experiences are like this. From personal experience, post-graduate research is like this. Many people, but perhaps not most, have experiences where they become part of some bigger thing. Where their interactions with peers are profoundly affected by those bigger things. == There is a risk of making too much of such ideas. But one might start from a position that interacting with people one has not known since childhood is filled with uncertainty. Any type of 'team building' mitigates that.
would love to see a study of past collegiate players who didn't make it to the pro's, and what they are doing now.
As in big time one and doners? I know I saw Greg Oden riding the pine trying to get his degree after leaving Ohio state as one of those. Or are you talking the average Joe? Average Joe knows the pros aren’t in the cards, stays there for 4 years and graduates with a degree while having college paid for by the scholarship. I was a tutor of math and chemistry in college and there was a difference in approach depending on your perception of reality.
a cross section would be interesting. i suspect it wouldn't be that dissimilar to the general public, though one might think the advantage of a free education gives them a leg up. or as too chatty stated, the camaraderie and competition
Depends on the value they place on the free education . I know a popular degree for some of the athletes at the university I went was turf grass management . Whereas some decided on engineering degrees (I had a couple in my classes and you knew who they were). But comraderie and a sense of something bigger than you can be accomplished by working together is a great life skill and something I’m trying to get my kids to understand early on.
i always thought that football was the ultimate team sport, and aside from the violence, taught the best life lessons.
Just the best name out there. I like watching a good ball game, but for me it ends there. Tampa is close enough for me to theoretically catch a game someday, as are the 'Stros, of which I'm not really a fan. RIP Chief Wahoo. Somebody out there had a sense of humor stuffing him into the closet on Columbus day. Not really my fight, though. Cleveland is reported to be one of the more family-friendly teams in the league, as is their park , which ironically enough is named "Progressive Field." Good Luck guys. Hope giving the indigenous-dude mascot the boot doesn't put a hoodoo on your team!
Out here they had the A’s vs. the Orioles. Talk about needing some fans in the stands. Camden Yards doesn’t look the same with only 8k people in it.
