185,000 miles, plugs replaced at 140K, no coolant loss, 1 qt M1 0-20 ~1500 miles,100 mile daily commute. Occasional cyl 1 or 3 misfires last fall, more frequent in colder weather with a few dual 301 and 303. Plugs look good, replaced coils for 1 & 3, now less frequent with warmer weather but still an occasional 300 or 303. Injector cleaner had no apparent effect. Would like to pass on to a family member but concerned that shops have not found a fix that lasts. What next, EGR?
Did you manual tests the fuel injectors to are if #3 was working as expected? If its dead, injector cleaner would never solved the problem. Valves might have being stucked, or cylinder head gasket problems
Thanks for the replies. Would a VOM show resistance such that I could compare all injectors or is there another test?
Injectors - RockAuto shows rebuilt under $30 with core exchange and Beck Arnley for $56. Tempting to do an injector swap and see what happens. Bu today was different. There was roughness at 60-65mph, still rough at lower speed (AC on). Off the freeway, turned off the AC, still rough from a stop and accelerating. While stopped roughness seemed almost enough to stop engine but didn't. No CEL, no codes actual, pending, or history. I checked it at home and the gas engine took longer than usual to turn on. Switched to energy monitor screen and the battery display had to go down to two bars and stay there before the gas engine started. Drove and the display showed arrows to the battery when accelerating but not at steady speed. Battery level rose to the third bar and when back in the garage the engine wasn't running to raise battery charge. Still no CEL or codes. Probably should be a separate thread
After the last post, my wife arrived home from her hour long commute complaining of a rough running engine but no CEL or Codes active, pending, or in history. Roughness more apparent at stop signs where she wondered if it would quit. I drove it without issue other than the battery charge level varied between two and three bars. She has put 99% of the 185K miles on the Pri and not prone to exaggeration. Since then I have been driving the Pri locally without any problems and wondering if the longer drive contributes to the problem. Still no CEL and battery charge level is back near the top.
Coolant level unchanged from where I put a mark several months ago. Oil level little changed from the oil change 1K miles ago. Doing fine on the 1/2 hour trips, gets to make an hour plus trip Saturday..
My wife did a longer drive today and reports roughness coming off the highway and slowing for a stop and again leaving the stop light. It went away at normal speeds and now I suspect the tranny is having problems shifting gears. Now I find there is no easy way to check fluid level. Still no CEL.
No, haven't done the egr cleaning yet. Local driving w/o problems had me in wait and see mode. Wife reminded my prior roughness was stopped waiting for a light to change.
EGR cleaning way overdue. They all clog, and by 185K miles likely near-total. Sadly: no mention in Toyota maintenance schedule, no updates, just a terse notification, that a minority of vehicles "may" experience EGR clogging. And wait for the symptoms, and/or warning lights.
Thanks, surprised there is no EGR code 0401. Got to love the disassembly required to work on the Pri.
