Hi all, I've been watching 'how priiis work' videos. Is the motor driving the rear diff on my '19 awd-e called mg3? Does it help to regenerate, or is it a drive motor only? Thanks, Dave.
In New Car Features (more info), Toyota calls it Motor Generator Rear (MGR), part of the Q510 rear traction motor with transaxle assembly. It’s an air-cooled induction motor, not a water-cooled permanent magnet motor like MG1 and MG2. MGR is supplied by the Rear Hybrid Motor Control Inverter Assembly, which converts DC from the HV battery into three-phase, variable-frequency AC at up to 201 volts. It’s not entirely clear, but I believe the latter. The specification table for MG1, MG2, and MGR says their functions are, respectively, “Generate, Engine Starter,” “Generate, Drive Wheels,” and “Drive Wheels,” and in the Repair Manual, when describing the Data List item for “Request Rear Motor Regenerative Brake Torque,” Toyota writes that the value should always be 0 N·m, and that “Regeneration by rear motor is not performed.” In New Car Features, however, a diagram does show DC returning to the HV battery from the rear inverter during deceleration, and Toyota writes, “The rear inverter converts the direct current from the HV battery into alternating current for MGR, or vice versa” (emphasis added).
I thought it’s usually referred to as MGR (rear). On the Prius, it’s motor only. In the HiHy, RXh, RAV4h, they do regen. Edit: what ^^ he said lol.
As well as the NXh as it’s shown on my wife’s display. I also looked in the Specs and is used for: Drives rear wheels, regeneration during braking. Not sure about the UXh. That motor is really small. After reading the Specs for the UXh, the rear motor is a 7hp induction motor and is used for: Drives rear wheels; stability control. So it doesn’t provide regen. Which seems earily like the Prius AWD-e and may be the same system. Unsupervised! iPhone ?
Your Owner's Manual says: Which seems to indicate that there is some power flow from the rear motor to the battery.

Here is a video on the older, larger MGR for the Highlander and RAV4 hybrids My understanding is that the Prius does not regen from MGR.
