We bought a 2005 Prius a few months ago for a pretty cheap deal knowing it would need a couple things (tie rod, mirror, small stuff). After making the repairs we discovered a horrible whining/humming noise. A few hours through Priuschat and I was able to diagnose it as a bad wheel bearing. I've never done anything like that. Called a shop and got quoted $1200. Decided to try it myself. Seriously you guys. I followed what people on these threads had said and was able to knock one side out in 1.5 hours. It was an amazing feeling. I was also able to do the rotors and brake pads simultaneously and again the threads here walked everything out step by step. Even dealing with the codes the dash threw up after. You are all amazing and those of you who have taken the time to write up detailed instructions and guides. I salute you.
Welcome to PriusChat!! 1200 for a wheel bearing is quite excessive I would say. You have a local hybrid guy over there @Texas Hybrid Batteries Texas Prius Battery Replacement
Seems very high as you state it is 1 to 1.5 hours tops per side. My mechanic charges $100 for both and will include pads/rotors as well as they come off anyways. Other shops will pretend doing the brakes is a brand new job lol and charge an additional hour or 2 labor on top of the hour or 2 labor for wheel bearings. You must be very mechanically inclined cause it isn't easy changing them out.
