First of all, I'm the third owner of a 2008 Touring, which I bought from a used 'Prius' car lot. At the time, I forgot to try the metal key, and always used the fob up until it's battery died. Taking out the metal key, I was not able to unlock the door. Graphite powder did not work. Tried to use small pliers to increase force, but still no movement. Since I bought the car from a guy who recycles and resells used Prius, I'm concerned that this is the wrong metal key for that car. Is there any locksmith that can make me a new key or must I resort to the dealer? Thanks.
The car door mechanical lock is the same as any other car. Any competent locksmith shop should be able to make one. It may be on a standard key blank, though. If the locksmith doesn't have the blank that fits your fob, you can purchase a new fob case on ebay or amazon for <10 bucks, which comes with a blank key. There's many sellers on ebay. heck, I think I even have 5 or 6 blanks from new covers I've bought. If you need one, I'd be happy to mail one to you.
the lock on a prius can get very stiff from non use. it is impossible to know if you have the right key or not. have you tried a good lubricant overnight and a pair of pliers? also, do you have a second fob?
Yep. First time I tried the actual key in my "new" '08, it didn't work at all. Thought it was the wrong key. Patience and gentle persuasion proved that it was indeed the correct key.
Tried graphite powder, no help. Not really wanting to use a wet lube. In case it gums up something else. No 2nd fob
let the locksmith give it a shot, and get a second fob while you're there. having no fobs is a huge mistake
