Gen 2 brake Caliper Noise

I once had a friend ask me to look at the brakes, and we found the pad was worn down to the backing, and my advice was, well, you'll need pads and a rotor, and should order them right away, and keep driving to a minimum meanwhile, but don't worry about driving home from here (was just a couple miles in town), or to pick up the parts, etc. It'll keep sounding as bad as it does now, but it's too late to save those parts anyway, and you'll have the replacements soon enough.

Well, the following day I heard it had folded up the pad backing plate and spat it out, so the parts list was now pads and a rotor and a caliper. I had never heard of that happening, but now I know it does.

 

I never saw prius rotors so shiny!

 

Its been awhile since it did alot of brake work.but there used to be a anti- squeal silicone compound that you would apply on the back of the pads to stop the squeal. You might want to check that out.

 

If it was me I will buy a new pads and rotor and slider pins and the metal shims. Take everything out - inspect the parts, clean them, grease them a little - put new parts on. It may be only 7000 miles ago but the parts are dirt cheap for this car and you will be sure. If it keeps doing it then replace the caliper. There are also very cheap original reman calipers compared to a new oem one.



2 weeks ago my friend blew a rubber hose so we had to replace it and it went very easy. All things off...also found out one slider was stuck welded inside - bought new bracket for $20..put everything new back on and new brake line. Bleed front and rear with the "wire method". Done.
