Mine was a used, 1966 VW MicroBus, 1500 cc, air cooled engine that typically delivered 28-29 MPG. When mileage dropped, the valve backlash needed adjusting and grit cleaning the spark plugs (leaded gas back then.) I'd flatten a cardboard box; drive over the curb, and; then crawl on the cardboard to work on the car.

Air cooled batteries can work but it takes a lot of volume and aggressive design. In contrast, Tesla has an integrated coolant loop that recovers waste heat from the motor and power electronic for cabin and battery heating:

Ah, the microbus. Glad you have fond memories of it. As you recall, pre1967 VWs had a 6 volt system. I can still remember my cassette tape player being a portable player (ie 4 x 1.5v D cell batteries) being connected to that 6 volt system :)
