Sheesh, that sucks. Have to pony up another 4-5k for a Corolla to get the cheapest Toyota now. Not a large segment i guess since Honda and Hyundai only sold a few more tho.
This happens because: Americans are STUPID; moreso than the general population in other areas. We want BIG and BAD. That will bite us in the behind when the price of fuel goes back UP.......as it inevitably will eventually. And then we will cry and whine because we can't afford to put gas into our big badassed pickups and SUVs. Other countries keep the price of fuel artificially high and stable with taxes. That encourages fuel economy.......and pays for roads and bridges. Those same countries still have extensive rail networks. Not us. We are STUPID.
I actually did a deep dive on Yaris-class cars before my last purchase, and I'm not surprised they're getting Darwined. Yarises DO get fairly good mileage scores but they're expensive, Prius-slow, and they are very very small. Appearances are subjective, but they also look too much like a baby largemouth bass. The hatch version averaged $20K OTD which means that if you live in a state that is likely to have high gasoline prices, that state will ALSO have incentives that would place a base Prime within a few thou of the soon-to-be-extinct Yaris. Marriage is an institution that works best with communication and compromises. I actually tried very hard to get my CFO to go for a small hatch but I would have been more likely to get a CNN anchor to wear a MAGA hat. YMMV
Our last, ICE only car was a 2001 Echo, the Yaris predecessor. I almost tipped it over taking a curve too fast forgetting it did not have a Prius low center of gravity. Bob Wilson
Shame. Hatchbacks generally do better in the subcompact segment, and the Mazda Yaris hatch just arrived last year as a 2020MY. The Toyota Yaris hatch was 7 years old in the US by that time. It looks like the new hatchback might be starting to turn things around, "the Yaris sedan is decimated with a 90% decline, and the all-new Yaris Hatchback version even outsold the sedan by a 2-to-1 margin in Q1." Not many will morn the death of the yaris in the US. It was vastly outsold (more than 10:1) by the corolla in the US. Nissan Versa, Honda Fit, and Kia Rio vastly have outsold it in its segment in the US. The segment has been shrinking and even though its a good car, it is not doing well in a shrinking segment, that with low gas prices is likely to shrink more.
Fuel won't go up .... not if you fuel with free PV electrons plus ~ you can still be big & bad Nevertheless, this is still sad news. First the Prius V, and the Prius C, and now this. Still - you can soon get a Rav4 plugin. Not 100% free fuel if you're driving too far .... but pretty decent. Not big & bad either - but pretty decent. Like bisco says, Rome wasn't built in a day. .
I predict that the price of fuel WILL go up significantly.......way BEFORE even 10% of the rolling fleet is powered by any form of renewable energy. Part of that will be due to the global recession triggered by the pandemic. WAY fewer people will be able to afford the additional initial cost of PV or even EV.
