As I've been here I've focused on the gen 2/3 for a cheap commuter. I'm new to gen 4 and Some have now talked me in to trading my 19 nissan for the 18 prius four with 32k we got in on trade. I'm not sure if well be able to do the deal but I'm curious what I should be looking for if we do. I have no problem working on it but I've seen my fair share working with nissan and their expensive sensors or dodges 12" screens, what kind of expensive parts could I expect to see if any issues with as this car goes out of basic soon?
Nissan and Chrysler make cars that need a lot of maintenance, Toyota generally does not. The Gen4 (2016-present) has shown itself to be very reliable as the Gen2 (2004-2009) was (the Gen3 had some engine issues, but that's another story). JeffD
I was in the same situation 4½ yrs ago - but kept reading that PRIUS have achieved up to a million kilometres, that brakes generally will last the life of the car, the transmission is bulletproof - compared with some of the other types of transmissions (CVT and TwinClutch and 8+ speed Autos) which can cost a fortune to repair - or replace, and in some cases, to just maintain. And - having read PriusChat for 5+ years, almost every post, I still believe that, overall, the PRIUS is one of the most exemplary cars for reliability and running costs. Mine is yet young, with only 60,000km - a couple of routine recalls, and a faulty brake light switch when new - a one-off problem which I've not read about any others having. That said - any of the TOYOTA Synergy Drive cars are similar in reliability - Camry, Corolla, RAV4 Hybrids.
There should be no worries but enter the VIN on the Toyota owners site to see what dealer work was done and to insure all recalls have been performed. I think it had the wiring harness inspection recall. They untape the harness, inspect for wear, and either replace it or re tape it with better insulating tape.
I got a chance to drive the 18 four and loved the car and features but I'm too far upside down to trade in right now. I'm going to dump into my current car and try to pay down the negative so it'll be easier to trade this time next year. When I do I'll have to trade new so I've been eyeing the 21 LEs. I'm shocked how they've made drastic changes to the 20+. They seem cheaper witj no 11 screen and I'm not going limited to get that. I want the small wheels
I have not kept up with the new model trims but most do not have a spare tire. They have a goop system that can clog up tire valves.
