Parked my car in front of the house today at noon. Went out to move it into the driveway at 6:00 PM and was greeted with an awful roar and the stink of gas. Also a bolt with a spring on it under the car. Pretty ballsy stealing it there in broad daylight. We live in what is now a pretty upscale neighborhood (but wasn't when we moved here). Hopefully one of the neighbor's doorbell cameras captured something. Of course they would do it on a Friday so that the insurance guys are now out of the office and I won't be able to get it fixed until next week.
The police have seen these thefts before in town, in some cases people had them stolen twice. So garage it if you can. As edthefox5 indicated, Toyota of Pasadena is out of cats and they are on on back order. I'm still waiting for Longo's parts department to call back but expect it will be the same for them.
Dealers don't stock these parts, they are at a central warehouse. If one dealer can't get it, another dealer will be the same. The values of these cars are not very high now, if you have insurance, it might just get totaled. You can of course buy it back and install a cat, which might make it worthwhile
Some pictures. The thieves' jack made a white mark on the street, possibly cement dust or soil from the last car they targeted. The position would have put it right behind the driver's side front wheel. It is easier to see by eye than in the picture. The jack didn't damage anything (at least not obviously), but of course the cat is gone.
