2005 Prius. I dropped my keys and my key fob was run over.

That is the RFID chip, used to start the car when it’s held next to the power button. It allows the car to start even if you have a dead battery

 

The fob needs to be put in the slot in a Gen 2.

 

Oh yes, I forgot Gen2 actually has a slot. Been a while since I've actually put a key in the slot.

 

New keys are easily obtainable these days. Even ACE Hardware sells them and programs them for you. Otherwise a bit cheaper on eBay with the usual risk that they won’t work.

 

ACE? How much would they charge for a key fob and programming?

I checked a couple weeks ago for a key on dealership websites, they seem to not sell them anymore

They have a huge display in mine and keys for all makes and models including Prius.

 

Do you have SKS? (little black button on the outside door and tailgate handles- two buttons under the dash- silver logo on the key fob- car unlocks if you just walk up to it with the fob in your pocket). The circuit board on a SKS car is the wireless remote entry and "allow things to run because it's near" part. The (missing) RFID chip is a separate piece that only works (allows the car to start) if the fob is inserted into the dash slot.

A non SKS car has the RFID chip but the circuit board only works to remotely lock or unlock with a button push.

First see if the circuit board still works. Hold a battery in place and push a button- does the little LED light up red and the car respond? If not then the board is likely broken. If it's not SKS then AFAIK you can get a used fob and program it to the car (using the "chicken dance? or Techstream). If the board does work then you can buy any gen2 used fob and program that RFID chip to your car and put the chip and your board and mechanical key in a new case.

If your (SKS) board is broken then you need to get a new or "virginized" fob to be able to program it to the car. (There is a process to get around this for a used SKS fob but that involves Techstream and special codes from questionable websites).

A place like Ace should be able to cut a mechanical key and "clone" the RFID chip on your good fob, but I have no idea what they would do for the remote entry functions- esp if it was for SKS.

edit: just googled and amazon shows a new aftermarket fob for gen2 SKS cars for $105. Use your good fob for "chicken dance" programming. Reuse the existing mechanical key or have the new blank cut.
