Lexus Head Gasket Replacement Turns into a $6500 Engine Job. Was It Worth It?

Interesting because it is basically a Gen 3 Prius engine.

Seems like engine rebuilds are fast becoming obsolete with newer cars... Engine swaps are way cheaper these days. It didn't use to be like that. But as one dude on here who was going to rebuild his Gen3 himself found out, finding gasket kits for rebuilds ain't easy if not impossible.

Overall a really good video showing what is involved when, not if, this happens to the early gen 3's. My DYI replacement with a used 2014 w/80K was ~$3,500 in parts and 40 hours over 2 weeks. This likely has already been answered, but,

    - which model year starting using the new solid head gasket?
    - which software update reprogrammed the EGR?

As he stated, frequent oil and coolant changes could extend the life of even early Gen 3 engines.

Makes sense... Of course coolant change in a Gen3 isn't so easy. I know lots of really talented mechanics who have worked on cars all their life who prefer to have it done at the stealership.

Easy if you use the UView vacuum coolant refill system. Even Harbor Freight sells a clone.

Cooling System Test and Refill Kit

Takes only 20 minutes. No starting and restarting the car and setting it into inspection mode.

You realize that you are stating the obvious to folks that ignore the facts, right? ;)

Capitalism would die a swift and horrible death if everyone was unwilling to ignore the facts...

REALLY?????. Apparently you haven’t taken a realistic look at the situation in the United States.
