Hi everyone, I have the option of buying a 2013 with 60,000 miles or 2011 with 25,000 miles. Both are the same price. Which one would you choose and why, assuming both are equal in other ways?

With that assumption? I'd get the 2013- it should be two years further away from needing a hybrid battery replacement. Those tend to go by time rather than miles.

Have you seen both? Might help with your decision.

The mileage difference is in enough to cause you any strife like's been mentioned before the battery will be 2 years newer in the other car but then again I've seen the 2013s and the 2011s get batteries replaced in record time whereas in my generation too they lasted 12 years generally or similarly I've seen generation 3's get batteries replaced in 4 years which I thought was quite interesting but I'm sure that's battery manufacturing issue I would hope.

all other things being equal, i'd go with the '13. low mileage over 12 years does not bode well for the hybrid battery. these cars like to be driven.
otoh, the 13 is closer to head gasket failure, so you want to get on the egr right away, change the oil every 5k and keep your fingers crossed

Definitely the 2011... This has collector's car potential if you are going to keep it garaged and only regularly drive it short distances.

Hi all thanks so much for taking the time to reply. @PriiusCamper we wont be keeping it in the garage, and my wife will be mostly driving it 30mins each way to work mon-fri - but i get what you are saying, that would make a nice collectors car.

I am going to see them and test drive this afternoon, so I really appreciate the help. I'll let you know what i am choosing, but sounds like the 2013 is in the lead.

Just remember that this is a really, really big assumption. Usually lasts about 8 seconds after you see the second car.

    Good luck!

Had a look at the cars yesterday, and took the 2013 for a test drive. Also look at some other Hybrids. Decided on the 2013 Prius, based on our research, and the helpful comments here. We'll pick the car up this evening hopefully!

Im excited, and nervous, I know a lot of expensive things can go wrong. I'll keep reading the forums to better understand how to take care of it so that I can give it the best chance.

Thanks again for all your help, im sure you'll hear more from me :)

My only conundrum now is should I take out the car dealers (not toyota) extra warranty which includes battery?

They also want to sell me a 3 Year Hybrid Warranty for approx $1,000 USD, i have asked for the terms of this, but what are your initial thoughts please?

It's a very slim chance you'll need it in the next three years.

    ...years 5, 6 & 7 (car age 15-17) are another story.

    Congrats and good luck!

quick update. Got the Prius friday evening, and been driving around all weekend. Really like it, Im keeping it in eco mode 90% of the time, and the gas is going down very slowly.

Loving the car so far, my only slight issue is 1 cup holder for the entire front and back! Doesnt seem right, i have had a little check for pull out cup holders but so far no luck, a very minor issue i know. So far very happy with the purchase. Thanks for all the help and advice.

There is a cup holder in the door pocket....
How many cups do you use?

I use one, and my family passenger will often have one, and then kids in the back might on road trips.. Most cars i have owned have two cup holders at the front, and one or two in the back. I went to get takeaway saturday, and was given two drinks, one went in the cup holder, and the passenger held the other. I will try the ones ion the door, the seem kind of small and a little hard to put a cup in there. Like i say, just a minor issue.

There’s 2 cup holders in the Center console: the front most one has a flip up lid, and pulling the armrest cover rearward reveals the second one.

That gets old fast. ECO imposes an excessive pedal travel, gets tiring. Try leaving ECO and PWR both off, will give you reasonable and very linear response.

Thanks for the tip, I drive it with all those off, but i meant on the dash screen it indicates when in eco / ev mode, and keeping the revs down and keeping it in eco mode automatically - is that the correct way? I havent tried driving it in only eco / ev or pwr modes yet.

I was excited about the cupholders, so checked, and my model doesnt have the another in the arm rest, just a big area to put things, which could be used for drinks with tight lids. The doors wont even take a regular water bottle from the shop, i'd have to buy the smallest bottles to fit in there. I looked at a video, and some models have the pull down back seats cup holders, but not mine.

What do people put in the tray below the gear stick?

Ah, ok. Yeah keeping it in the “eco” zone is good, supposedly more efficient. If you’re on an upgrade, or just need to accelerate quickly, then you need to push beyond eco.

Keeping to the left of the median line (on the bar graph display) the car will usually run electric-only.

It's those minor issues that are a pain! (y)
