Today when pressing on the break pedal it’s making a squeak or toot kind of sound. Just as I’m pressing down on the break pedal not the actual brakes. Even when car is stopped.

Not the sound that occurs when a car has been sitting for a while. Any ideas? Thanks

Is the noise there only as the pedal is moving or does it continue if you hold the pedal down? Every time you press on the pedal? If you have the car stationary while in READY - park, does it make any noise if it just sits there for 5-10 minutes?

Can you record a video and post a link to it?

It seems to be intermittent but I’ve never heard this sound before. Almost sounds like it might not be coming directly from the pedal but not sure. It’s there as I initially press pedal even if I press pedal while parked. Doesn’t stay noisy as pedal is pressed all the way down. (so far). I need to listen to it again when I head out later today. I’ll try to record it. Thank you!

itis the very beginnings of brake failure, but can take a long long time, or may never get worse

So what does brake failure mean? My brakes are checked regularly and currently pads and rotors are in good shape. Are you talking about other components of the braking mechanism?

It’s the brake actuator under the hood.
Some describe it as barking or quacking

It might help to have somebody press the brake while you listen in the engine compartment. (ICE motor off, off course.) From the driver's seat it is often very hard to tell where "in front of you" a sound is originating.

The others are probably right, but there is always a possibility that it is something trivial, like the hinge on the pedal needing lubrication or the brake sensor switch plunger binding and squeaking. (Speaking from experience on other types of cars.) Stick your head right up next to the brake pedal pad and push it with your hand. If the sound is at the pedal you can probably tell, the mechanical sounds just described will be "up" from the pad, but problems in the engine bay will probably sound "forward".
