Threat of imprisonment is a very strong motivator. He very well knows that this is his best path to stay out. And probably also to avoid mass asset seizure by creditors.

There was a high school experiment in 1967 that demonstrated how a figure can gain control over a group. It happened fast, like the second day the class showed loyalty to the teacher. It’s called “the wave.” There was a book and a couple of movies based on the experiment. I watched one not long ago. The idea started when the class was asking how the German people allowed what happened before and during WW2. Apparently the book was/is required reading in German schools.
