Hi. I have a Prius 2nd Gen and two days ago i was driving and after around 30Miles i got warning light with red triangle on a highway, probably i was driving at 60MPH. It was a hot day and car’s A/C was also switched on. I stopped on the road side and plugged the OBD scanner it gave me P0a93 code. My first thought was that car is overheating. I switched off the engine and waited there like ten minutes. After that i cleared the codes and drove like another 60 miles without A/C. I drove around 200 Miles since then and has no problem at all. Should i be worried and get it checked or something? Or was it just overheating due to weather and A/C load. I also am thinking that 2nd gen is not ideal for long travel with A/C on due to it’s 1.5 engine. Your thoughts please. Thanks
Not so I drive my generation 2 Prius on 500 mi trips pretty regularly with the air conditioning on ice cold running 75 all the way without any problems whatsoever especially if there's just myself and one other person in the car and it's perfect If you're really hot natured some people will tint the windows makes the inside of the car dark and cold. You need to get your code scanned with a really good scanner just to see what's holding in memory need to check your AM2 fuse Make sure the pink fluid is moving around in the inverter fluid jug that's like in the middle of the underhood attached to the silver box that's under your hood
The car likely wasn't overheating, but the P0A93 says the inverter was not cooling efficiently. A failed inverter coolant pump is the most common failure to cause this. You can check this easily by putting the car in IG-ON (two presses of the Power button with your foot OFF the brake pedal), opening the inverter coolant tank (next to the shiny inverter cover), and then looking for the coolant being agitated quite noticeably. If you see no movement of coolant your inverter coolant pump has failed and you should replace it. Without a functioning inverter coolant pump, yes likely the inverter got too warm. With everything working, temperatures of 32ºC would not cause an issue, whether the A/C was on or not. It would be mighty uncomfortable not using A/C at those temperatures. With everything working the Gen 2 is a fine touring car and you should have no issues whether the A/C is on or off.
