Is my XLE 2023 MPG normal ?

    New XLE on 10/12/2023, now ~1500 miles total. In 41 days, drove 1508 miles put in 30.681 gallons equals 49.15 MPG. Toyota.com specs 52 highway, 52 town, 52 combined. Driving like an old man trying to get good mileage. Not happy. What can I try to do better?

    That could be normal. For the tests, the tires have more wear on them than that, which reduces rolling resistance. Then if your daily driving involves freeways, you likely are going faster than the tests are.

    As a Gen 4 Prius Prime owner who regularly averages 70 mpg in the HEV mode (80 mpg on the MFD), the mention of ~ 50 mpg gives me nightmares.

    It is an EV. If you want to post random mpg pics, then I can post the MFD showing 999.9 mpg.

    I said in the HEV mode and regularly.

    "I will not bother anyone with details but a recent long drive of a 23 Prius offered up the following result."

    One data point, which could involve a lot of downhill and/or slow driving, hardly means anything.

    You didn't provide us with enough information other than saying that you drive like an old man. mpg will greatly vary with driving conditions.

    Those are not "Toyota specs", those are "EPA estimates", and are based on a set of very specific and well defined test cycles. "Your mileage may vary." Almost no one has driving conditions matching the EPA test cycles.

    What was your typical speed? What was the weather? What were traffic and driving conditions? High speeds (above 60 mph) and cold weather reduce MPG. For more hints, browse through these old items:

    Your mileage is only about 5% lower than the EPA estimate. While you might be able to better that, depending on driving conditions and technique, I'm not sure it indicates an actual "problem".

    I appreciate the comments. One thing I noticed is that when I start the car the engine runs immediately. Garage temperature is in the 50's. Outside air is 10F to 30F. Heater control is set to Auto and 70F. Engine runs more than 60-70 % of the time when driving. My drive is out a 1/2 mile driveway to 7 miles of 30 to 50 mph hard surface road, then 2 miles at 20-25 in town to the coffee place. This is my 5th Prius in just a couple of years and now when I think about it, the engine runs way more than any of the others. All previous Prius got 55-65MPG. I realize there are many factors affecting MPG, but I don't think my driving habits changed. After asking dealer and reading here about getting 17" wheels, I don't think that would help much or at not save enough to pay for the expense. Guess I'll drive through the winter and see what happens in the spring.

    have you checked all your climate settings to make sure nothing is on that shouldn't be?

    what tyres pressure are you running?

    If you driving on 19 inch wheels, you're getting the mpg that is expected. EPA estimates for the XLE is 49 mpg. Changing to 17 inch wheels and tires may improve your mpg.

    That sounds normal. If you’re within hailing distance of the spec, you’re doing good.
